Dust worms – how to fight them effectively? We suggest proven methods

Dust worms can appear in our house especially when there are conditions favorable for the existence of gnats. We check what they eat, where they come from in homes, whether they are harmful and how to get rid of them.

Gryzki: what is it?

Gryzki, also known as psotniks or zakamnikami, are the so-called. dusty, i.e. common living in many houses. They are tiny, difficult to see with the naked eye, usually measuring from 0.5 mm to 5 mm. They have well-developed eyes and characteristic, long antennae. Some species are wingless, but most have two pairs of tiny, transparent wings. They can be white, beige, yellow or brown. The family of gnats has as many as 4,400 species, of which over 70 occur in Poland.

Gryzek: where does he live?

Bite is dusty, but it nests not only in dust. It lives wherever it can find food: organic remains, mold, lichens, algae, as well as insect eggs, pollen or dead organic matter. Due to its predilection for organic remains and mold, it willingly inhabits basements, pantries or damp attics, but also kitchens and bathrooms, libraries with poorer sanitary conditions, and even food warehouses or grocery stores. In nature, it lives mainly in forests, on the bark of trees and shrubs, in meadows, as well as in haystacks. It is attracted to human homes by readily available food. Nesting of the bite in the apartment is favored by the location of the house in the vicinity of trees or wetlands, especially if the interior is humid.

Dust bugs: where do they come from at home?

What makes dust mites appear in our homes? The occurrence of bites is closely related to moisture. When it exceeds 60 percent, dust bugs are able to absorb water from the air. Their appearance in the house may therefore be a signal that the air humidity in the apartment is too high. It is worth making a thorough inspection of the room, because perhaps water is leaking somewhere or a fungus is forming. Bites penetrate into human dwellings through open windows, ventilation ducts or leaks in the walls. However, they can be successfully brought along with books from the library (not without reason they are also called book lice). They also appear in food warehouses and grocery stores, they can easily penetrate loose products packed in paper bags, such as flour, groats, rice, powdered milk or flakes. So it is not difficult to bring them home with food. In apartments, they are particularly eager to nest in bathrooms and damp corners and home basements, but they are also willing to colonize kitchens and even wardrobes with clothes.

The nook prankster: is it harmful?

The blackbird is one of the dust species inhabiting homes, grocery stores, libraries, food warehouses and museums with herbariums and entomological collections. It has biting mouthparts, so it can bite paper wallpaper, books, clothes made of natural materials and food products. However, for it to cause serious damage, it needs a huge colony of it. It is worth keeping this in mind in order to prevent a systematic increase in the population of bites, as this may expose us to large material losses. The pranksters themselves are not dangerous to people or pets. They do not bite people and do not carry diseases. However, they can cause an allergic reaction in a small number of people. This allergy is caused by allergens found on bites, most often dust mites carried by them. The presence of dust worms can also lead to allergy sufferers and people struggling with bronchial asthma to exacerbate the symptoms of the disease.

Bites (pranks): how to get rid of them?

It is best not to allow bites (pranksters) to appear in our home. It is therefore worth keeping the apartment clean, regularly ventilate the rooms and vacuum all, even hard-to-reach surfaces. However, if nooks and crannies appear in our home, a thorough inspection of the rooms should be made in search of fungus or mold. It is also worth taking care of reducing the humidity in the room. Home remedies for getting rid of dust worms are usually ineffective. Improving ventilation in the bathroom or sealing windows and doors will certainly help in the fight against unwanted tenants, but it is worth reaching for an insecticidal preparation of appropriate strength and the possibility of application in hard-to-reach places. The following are available on the market:

  • insecticidal sprays – they are used topically in the case of low insect intensity
  • liquids for spraying – the solution is sprayed in places of existence
  • fogging bombs – the most effective, but requiring special preparations (good sealing of the room) and time (long and thorough ventilation is needed after the application).

It is best to use professional disinfestation for bites. The most commonly used method is the ULV fogging method, which consists in the generator throwing an insecticidal preparation in the form of a mist, reaching all hard-to-reach places. This method does not damage household appliances and electronics, does not wet the surface or damage wallpapers.
