The world premiere of Agnieszka Holland’s latest film ended with a 15-minute ovation. “Green border” is tipped to be a strong competitor in the race for the main prize of the festival.

The film, which is competing for the Golden Lion, is inspired by the events on the Polish-Belarusian border. Before the show, during a press conference, participants held a minute’s silence to honor the refugees who have died trying to reach Europe since 2014.

In Venice, the director was accompanied by a large group of co-creators of the film, including actors Jalal Altawil, Maja Ostaszewska and Tomasz Włosok. The former was particularly moved by the reaction of the audience after the ceremonial premiere of “Green Border”. There were tears in his eyes.

The authors of the script are Agnieszka Holland, Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and Maciej Pisuk. The cast included Jalal Altawil, Maja Ostaszewska, Tomasz Włosok, Behi Djanati Atai, Mohamed Al Rashi and Jaśmina Polak. Due to the theme, parts of the environment related to, among others, with law and justice. Krystyna Pawłowicz, without seeing it, called “Green border” “a thoughtless, fejkowy, irresponsible, disgraceful reptilian”.

“Green Border” – when will it premiere in Polish cinemas?

“Green Border” will be shown in Polish cinemas from September 22. We will know whether the production will hit the big screens in our country as a winner of the Golden Lion on September 10 – then the jury of the festival in Venice will announce the winners of the event. The chairman of the jury is Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”). They are also competing for the award. “The Killer” by David Fincher and “Priscilla” by Sofia Coppola.

The film, as the creators point out, is a fictional story, but the film’s script was based on real events. Preparations for the film included hundreds of hours of document analysis, interviews with refugees, border guards, borderland residents, activists and experts. “Green Border” will also be screened at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival and the 61st New York Film Festival.
