“Detectives” returned to TVN after many years. We saw the new episode so you know if it’s worth it

Television stations are more and more willing to return to proven formats. This season, TVN decided to reactivate the series “Detektywi”, which was one of the first docu-crime series in Poland. We decided to check how the program was refreshed after 11 years. Honestly? It would be better if this return did not happen, writes Bart³omiej Marcinkowski of Gazeta.pl.

In the era of streaming services, TV broadcasters face a real challenge to keep viewers with them. The phenomenon of restoring old and proven formats, which were very popular years ago, is increasingly observed. In this way, there is a chance that people who have already abandoned watching TV will sit down again in front of the receivers or turn on these productions on specific platforms.

“Detectives” returned to the TVN schedule. It’s not the same series though

This fall, TVN decided to bring back “Detektywów”, a production that was one of the first quasi-documentary series in Poland. The series was broadcast from 2005 to 2012 and had 1,040 episodes. The main characters were members of a detective office who solved investigations commissioned to them by clients. It is no different in the refreshed version of the format. However, this is the only thing that has remained unchanged in “Detectives”.

In the first episode of the new series “Kat”, Anna Potaczek and Maciej Dębosz (who starred in a similar production years ago – “W11 – Investigation Department”) deal with the case of a woman who was hit by a car. Soon, the client receives a package with a bomb that explodes and injures the courier and the recipient’s partner. The story sounds like a typical episode of “Detectives”, but what I saw is not at all like the atmosphere of the episodes from years ago.

Previously, the series (although still quasi-documentary) had a hint of mystery. On the other hand, the narration in this year’s episode seems to be much more sensational from its first minutes. This is influenced by energetic music, dynamic camera movements and the so-called. hundreds, i.e. the famous “one-on-one” confessions to the camera, which are decorated with stripes with the character’s signature. That wasn’t the case in Detectives.

Also, the “cunning” actions of the detectives and heroes of the episode are much less realistic than they used to be. The main antagonist of the series immediately turns out to be an unbalanced person who says things to his random client that no serious person would say out loud to a stranger. On the other hand, detectives do not always consult their actions among themselves, which also raises some doubts.

The new episodes are also longer – now 40-42 minutes long (excluding commercial breaks), but that doesn’t make the episode any more engaging. On the contrary. The series now resembles the competing “Cops” from Polsat more than what viewers remember from a decade ago. It is obvious that a lot has changed since 2012, but the creators of the series did not modernize the series in an interesting way.

The scenes shot from the point of view of Anna Potaczek, who at the end of the episode aimed a gun at a man suspected of illegal acts, evoke a slight sentiment. And fragments that happen in the car, where we listen to detectives’ dialogues. The once-famous phrases that internet users laughed at (e.g. “”) immediately came to mind.

However, in my opinion, “Detectives” currently does not stand out in any particular way. They are just another quasi-documentary series broadcast in the afternoon, which, due to the name developed years ago, has a chance to watch better than new formats, which rarely convince viewers nowadays. However, this need not be an indicator. Four years ago, “Judge Anna Maria Wesołowska” returned to the TTV schedule and the new episodes did not last long in the schedule.
