Fincher shocked by standing ovation for “Killer”. “What is this?”. Less colorful in the reviews

David Fincher presented the latest film “Killer” with Michael Fassbender in the title role. The audience of the International Film Festival in Venice awarded the production with a standing ovation. The director was surprised by the enthusiasm, he had no idea how to behave.

David Fincher is an unquestionable sign of quality for many moviegoers. When the name of the director appears next to the title of the film, we can guess that an exciting screening awaits us. The creator earned this reputation with the Oscar-nominated films “Mank”, “The Social Network” or “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, as well as the titles beloved by viewers: “Zodiac”, “Game”, “Seven” and “Fight Club” “.

David Fincher’s “Killer” received a standing ovation. The director didn’t know how to react

It’s been three years since the release of Fincher’s last film, Mank. After this time, the director presented his latest work at the International Film Festival in Venice. Michael Fassbender returned to the big role after a few years away as the titular killer in The Killer. The production delighted those present at its world premiere.

After the screening of “Killer”, the audience awarded the film with a five-minute standing ovation. Unfortunately, the audience’s delight was not seen by the actors Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton, who joined the filmmakers’ strike and did not appear at the event. Fincher obviously didn’t expect such an enthusiastic response. When the audience got up from their chairs after the official premiere of the film and started clapping, the director nervously waved his hands and silently asked everyone: “What is this?”. As he stood in front of the cheering crowd, it was obvious how awkward he felt about the crowd’s reactions.

David Fincher’s “Killer” with great reviews

Critics present during the premiere did not spare compliments to the film in their reviews as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, the production recorded a 90 percent freshness rating. James Mottram from “South China Morning Post” tempts viewers with comparisons of the thriller to the cult “Seven”. Critics point out that Fincher is still in great shape, uses his skills well, and the film shows his flawless artistry.

The only complaint against the production is the “orthodox” embedding in the genre, which is supposed to make the film quite simple and predictable. Hannah Strong of Little White Lies writes that the picture’s plot “isn’t very ambitious for someone like Fincher.” Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine notes that “the line between self-reflection and self-parody is very thin here, and ‘The Killer’ comes dangerously close to crossing it too many times.”

Polish fans of David Fincher’s work will soon be able to evaluate the director’s latest work on their own. “The Killer” will be available on the streaming platform Netflix already November 10, 2023.
