Robert Makłowicz was born on August 12, 1963 in Kraków. His parents made sure that he received a solid education. He attended the best kindergarten in the city and quickly began to travel around Europe. His passion for the world was certainly also due to his origin. Polish-Ukrainian-Armenian-Hungarian-Austrian blood flows in his veins.
From newspaper to television. Makłowicz made a sensation with a culinary program on TVP
His passion for cooking started when he was still a child. “One of the first gifts I got was silver-plated cutlery with my monogram on it,” he told. After graduating from high school, he continued his studies. He first studied law and then history at the Jagiellonian University. In the late 1980s he left for Great Britain, where he worked as a laborer in Kingston Upon Thames. It was then that he had the opportunity to get to know different cuisines of the world and thus wanted to become a culinary critic. After returning to his homeland, he intended to pursue this goal. First, he worked for “Gazeta Wyborcza”, from which he was eventually fired… for not attending morning colleges. His television career was decided by chance. The spontaneously created video was sent to the authorities and that’s how he got a job on the morning show.
Soon after, he met Agnieszka Pogoda, with whom he fell in love at first sight. They got married in 1991 and had two sons, Mikołaj and Ferdinand. It was his wife (then still fiancée) who began to persuade him to create an original format, combining traveling with presenting typical dishes for a given corner of the world. However, not everyone saw the potential in this idea. – We were surprised that he takes up making, although he can’t cook at all – recalled the presenter’s colleague in an interview. Ignoring the opinions of others, he trusted his beloved, and in 1998 the first episode of the program “Robert Makłowicz’s Culinary Travels” was broadcast, which caused an immediate sensation.
He left TVP in an atmosphere of scandal. Today he is an internet star
After a decade, the program replaced a new format, “Makłowicz on a journey”, which was broadcast regularly until 2017. Then there was a conflict, after which the presenter was fired. The cause of the dispute was the use of his statement, which was supposed to sound in the “Bake Off – Ale Ciacho” advertising spot, and was eventually used for promotion. – They wanted to give me a ready-made text to read, something I had never experienced before in my life and career. I said that they were probably stupid and that I would say something off the top of my head – he recalled. “I said TV tastes different, but this show is just sweet and perfect,” he added. – They made me a sentence out of all this: “Television tastes only sweet and perfect”, that is, they used my mouth to advertise the entire TVP – he said, not hiding his indignation.
After the contract was terminated, he bought the rights to the program, which was broadcast on the Food Network under the name “Makłowicz on the road” for the next three years. Ultimately, however, he decided to move to the network with the production of the next episodes. There was a good opportunity for this, because then the first lockdown in Poland was announced due to the coronavirus pandemic. In this way, his original YouTube channel was launched, which still enjoys unflagging popularity among Internet users.
