The 71st edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival will make a retrospective on the Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara, within the classic film cycle, in which 20 titles (feature films, medium films and short films) that he directed between 1953 and 1992 will be shown.
Hiroshi Teshigahara (1927-2001) is a key auteur of Japanese cinema of the 1960s, thanks to a series of experimental poetic films and his long collaboration with the writer Kobo Abe. The only one of his films that was distributed in Spain, the celebrated Suna no onna / Woman in the Dunes (La mujer de la arena, 1964), is a reflection of that time and Teshigahara’s style.
The Japanese director studied Fine Arts and began in the world of cinema in the mid-50s, in the field of documentary shorts. He was interested in all the Western cinematographic currents that had shown the resistance movements during World War II. He was part of the club called Cinema 57, in which documentaries were projected and discussed, which on many occasions were not seen in commercial theaters. This interest in documentary film was also reflected when he turned to making feature films.
His association with the writer Kobo Abe was very fruitful. He wrote the scripts for several films and adapted three of his novels for film at Teshigahara’s request.
Two of the Japanese filmmaker’s films have been previously seen in Donostia. In the 1985 edition, he presented the tape “The Woman of the Sand” in the “Ashes and Diamonds” cycle. And in 2008, “The Man Without a Map” was screened as part of the “Japan in Black” retrospective.
This retrospective is part of the classic film cycle, co-organized with the Basque Film Library and carried out in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and Etxepare Euskal Institutua within the framework of the Euskadi-Japan 2023 programme. The cycle will complement the publication of Inuhiko Yomota’s book Crónicas of Vanguard. Conversations with Hiroshi Teshigahara, translated from Japanese by Daniel Aguilar.
