When the number of new subscribers to the platform’s services began to decline, Netflix began preparations for changing the rules. The risky decision to charge extra to users outside of the account holder’s household has started to be enforced in selected countries. Latin American countries went first, followed by Canada, New Zealand and several European countries.

In May 2023, a message about changes in the use of Netflix was sent to subscribers from 103 countries, including the United States, Great Britain and Poland. The rules were reviewed in early June. The service has since blocked access to the account for people from other households.

Account sharing on Netflix is ​​unlikely to come back. The numbers speak for themselves

The Wirtualne Media portal has released data from Antenna, which clearly indicate that Netflix’s controversial decision paid off. Although at first users of the application were outraged and threatened to leave, the statistics speak for themselves. For the second month in a row, the platform beat competing streaming services in terms of gaining new users. Before the fight against account sharing began, Netflix in the US was registering around 1.2 – 1.5 million new users per month. In June, the number reached the ceiling of 3.5 million, and in July 2.6 million.

Although the ratings are falling, July’s result is still over a million users higher than those recorded in the first quarter of the year. The data also shows that at the end of June, Netflix recorded 238 million paying users. That’s an increase of 5.9 million.
