What has Ecuador meant to you in more than two decades of experience?
louse: It is said that one always has a second home. Colombia is clearly my country, but internationally Ecuador is my second home. They love me very much and I feel at home when I come.
david: We have been coming to Ecuador since 1998 and we share so many years with the people of this country. But even when we go on an international tour, for example to the United States or Europe, we are in the shows with Ecuadorians. We have a special anecdote at the Sabor Latino nightclub in New York, where we met a 100% Ecuadorian audience. So not only here, but everywhere we go, we have Ecuadorian support.
What is your new theme about, Impossible love?
louse: It’s a song written by Enrique William that he gave me in 2018 but I told him to wait a few years before recording and in 2020 we started the pandemic then we had to stop everything and finally I decided to record it when the market started to reactivate for everyone in the music industry. And according to what he tells me, he was inspired by an unattainable love – and it unfortunately passed away – from his adolescence.
But I will try yes it is yours.
Luis: It’s a story that happened to me with my wife when we first met in 2003. At that time she was in love with college and he was very obsessive with her saying things like “if he wasn’t there it was not for anyone’, so that’s why the song is called I will try, because I tried to conquer her until I made her my wife, we have been married for 20 years and I got it out of her mind.
david: Luis told his story and I took care of the musical part, the guitars, the pianos and the accordion complement each other in the melody so that they sound in the style we have been using for years. What characterizes Luis Mateus is that the musical arrangements define the style and when a song plays, the audience already recognizes it.
On the disc we can also enjoy I feel like I’m dying
Yes, and in that issue we also combine bachata and bolero.
What do you think is still the appeal and charm of vallenato at a time when the urban genre is sweeping all platforms?
They are styles. And life is made up of moments, of trends in clothes, in mobile phones, in cars and also in music and now reggaeton, youtubers and the influencers, that didn’t exist before, but vallenato always has been and will be because it is part of our Colombian folklore and cultural and musical heritage of humanity.
