Although Charles Manson was a serial killer, he never killed himself. The crimes were committed by members of his sect, blindly watching him and ready to do whatever he told them to do. In August 1969, not only the pregnant Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski’s wife, died at the hands of “Rodzina”.

Tate and Polanski met on the set of The Fearless Vampire Killers. Although, as both later admitted, the first impression was not positive, eventually the professional acquaintance turned into something more. They married in January 1968, and their relationship aroused great interest in the press. A year later, Sharon became pregnant. On the night of August 8/9, 1969, in a villa in Benedict Canyon belonging to Sharon, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, but also Wojciech Frykowski, Agnieszka Osiecka’s ex-husband, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, Sharon’s ex-fiancé and friend, and Steven Parent.

Two years before the tragedy, Charles Manson founded a sect he called “The Family”. He talked about the approaching Armageddon and the coming “slaughter of the whites”. In early August, he announced to his followers that they must start a revolution themselves. On the night of August 8/9, 1969, he did not appear at Benedict Canyon himself. Several “Family” members arrived there, as well as Manson himself, who had been trying to get into the villa months before.

Wojciech Frykowski was lying on the lawn in front of the house, the body of Abigail Folger was found next to him. The Polish film producer had been friends with Roman Polañski for years. He was married to Agnieszka Osiecka, from his first marriage he had a son, Bartłomiej, whose daughter is Maja Frykowska. He met Abigail during his stay in the States, where he went in the hope of developing a writing career. They were a couple, Folger was friends with Tate. Both took care of Polanski’s pregnant wife during his absence. Steven Parent was found murdered in a car. The 18-year-old found himself near the villa by chance when he came to visit William Garretson, who was in charge of the property, and who lived in the guest house. A teenager tried to sell him a TV. He died on his way back to the car. Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring lay inside the villa. Before the actress became involved with Polanski, she was engaged to Sebring. Although they separated, they remained friends. The man tried to defend Tate, but to no avail.

On the front door, members of the Manson sect wrote the word “PIG” (pig) in blood. The next day, another crime took place. Rosemary and Leno LaBianca, owners of a clothing store and a supermarket, living in the Los Feliz district, were murdered. The wall of their house also had the words “Death to pigs” written in blood on it, and inside the wrong title of a Beatles song, “Healter Skelter” (instead of “Helter Skelter”).

The crime in Polanski’s villa quickly became famous. This was influenced not only by the director’s popularity, but also by the brutality with which those staying in the house were murdered. – The victims were tied with ropes, and there were many stab, bruised and gunshot wounds on their bodies. They all died in incredible agony. Frykowski, who defended himself, had the most wounds – said Dr. Piotr Girdwoyń in the broadcast

The perpetrators were caught a few months later, when one of the perpetrators in custody (where she was in connection with another case) began bragging in her cell about the crimes she had committed. Charles Manson’s “Family” trial lasted until 1971. The sect members were sentenced to life imprisonment. After the sentencing, Manson shaved his hair and: “I am the Devil and the Devil always has a bald head.” Earlier, he appeared in court with a swastika tattooed between his eyebrows. Manson passed away in 2017. In 2023, Leslie Van Houten, one of the followers involved in the murder of the LaBianca family, was released after more than 50 years in prison.
