Allende (Lima, 1942) offered a virtual talk as part of the activities of FIL Guadalajara.
Feminism has made “mistakes”, but it is the “most important” revolution that has occurred in the world, the Chilean-American considered this Friday. Isabel Allende in the presentation of his book Women of my soul on the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) that takes place in Mexico.
“Feminism is the most important revolution that has occurred because it encompasses half of humanity. Nobody has a map or a manual, one starts with anger and from then on, many mistakes are made, many people are lost because they are scared, today’s feminism is very different and continues to be combative “, he expressed.
Allende (Lima, 1942) offered a virtual talk as part of the fair’s activities in which she spoke about her conviction that feminism is the ideology that has helped transform the world and literature.
“We live in that macho culture and it must be challenged in all instances through literature, art, cinema, movements, in the street, in fashions, in the way we speak and express ourselves, everything is in questioning and that is being done by young people, men and women, it is not just a feminine thing “he explained.
In a dialogue with the Mexican narrator and journalist Sofia SegoviaAllende recalled that her conviction for feminism arose when she saw the submissive and economically subdued figure of her mother who was abandoned by her husband with three children and who had received an education to be someone’s wife regardless of the creative potential she had.
She affirmed that technologies and social networks have helped the current feminist movement to generate change in a faster way than previous generations achieved.
“Each generation brings something different and faces different problems because the world has changed. The girls who demonstrate in the street for #MeToo live in an age of social networks, of instant communication, that did not exist before and then progress is much faster ”, express.
Women of my soul (2020) was born with the intention of telling her story, that of her grandmother and that of other women who have been part of her life and whose stories are an example of the transformations that women have had in front of the world.
The author of The House of Spirits (1982) and The Japanese lover (2015) stated that he would like his new book to help people understand that it is important to talk about equality between men and women.
“I hope the book was a topic of conversation between mothers and daughters, or between a dating couple or two girls, who when reading it find a way to talk about something that concerns us all”, he concluded.
FIL takes place from November 27 to December 5 with the attendance of 600 writers from 46 countries, with the participation of more than 3,000 professionals and 255 exhibitors from 27 countries with an editorial offer of 240,000 titles in 10,000 square meters of exhibition. (I)
