In 1954, he graduated from the Krakow theater school and immediately began his career. Initially, he mainly played cameos, gaining experience in front of the camera. The success came quickly, and it was Maciek Chełmicki in the cult film, which can be viewed on the website.
He named his son after the hero he played. The role of a father was a challenge for him
However, before he gained real popularity, he lived in Gdańsk, where he founded the BIM-BOM theater together with Jacek Federowicz and Bogumił Kobiela, who was his good friend. It was he who introduced him to a beautiful girl, Elżbieta Chwalibóg, who lived with them in a small apartment. The friendly relationship quickly turned into a deep feeling and they became a couple. When the woman became pregnant, they decided to get married, which the actor’s parents insisted on. They got married on August 30, 1960, and a few months later they moved to Warsaw.
Initially, they did not fare well in the capital. They were evicted from the rented room just before giving birth. On January 30, 1961, their only son, Maciej, appeared in the world. Cybulski was happy and depressed at the same time, because he was unable to ensure the safety of his loved ones. Eventually, he found an apartment on Czerniakowska Street, where Chwalibóg lives to this day. To improve the financial situation of the family, the actor threw himself into the whirlwind of professional duties. He was rarely home, and his son’s demands for attention only got on his nerves. – When Zbyszek came home tired at night, Maciek would wake up and want to play with his father. It irritated Zbyszek. He loved his son, but could not take care of him – the actor’s wife.
He died when his son was 7 years old. This affected Maciej’s adult life
On January 8, 1967, Zbigniew Cybulski died tragically under the wheels of a train, orphaning his then 7-year-old son. Maciek was left under the care of his mother and, as he recalled years later, he had a carefree childhood. He didn’t remember many moments together with his father, but he assessed their relationship as correct. He remembered the moment when he got a series of slaps for calling the babysitter insulting words. “My father was patient with me, perhaps because we rarely saw each other. When a man knows that he will only stay at home for a few days, he will endure everything – he said. He also fondly recalled the expensive gifts his father gave him on various important occasions.
She had a different opinion on this matter. She claimed that the lack of a male role model negatively affected the adolescent boy. He did not want to study, played truant, caused behavioral problems and was aggressive towards his peers, which consequently meant that he was placed in a “school for difficult children”. “My mother visited me once a month,” he said bitterly. The situation did not improve even when he was already an adult. He was in no rush to be independent, preferring to party rather than work. His main source of income was his father’s royalties, to which he only occasionally added extra money. However, he decided to settle down, but Chwalibóg did not accept his chosen one who moved into their apartment. The conflict led to Maciej’s judicial eviction. Since then, he stayed with friends and abused alcohol, which led to serious health problems, mainly with his liver. Maciej Cybulski died on February 19, 2016 at the age of 55.
