The reality of war from the perspective of a Polish Jew. How did the fate of the hero of the film “Philip” turn out?
“Filip” was based on biographical motifs from Leopold Tyrmand’s novel of the same title. The main character is a Polish Jew. We meet him when he and his beloved, Sara, are preparing to perform in the cabaret of the Warsaw ghetto. However, their joyful mood is interrupted by the reality of war. The girl dies and the young man also loses his family. In despair, he leaves for Frankfurt, where he is employed in one of the prestigious hotels. In order not to be exposed, he hides his true identity, claiming to be French. Although he tries to live a normal life, the accompanying loneliness becomes unbearable, so he tries to put it to sleep, taking advantage of the luxuries of life there.
TVP production is shocking. There had to be a censored version of the film
The production was carried out on a grand scale, and many reviews emphasize its truly world-class level. The success was due to many factors, above all the excellent direction and well-chosen cast. The title character was played by an actor of the young generation, Eryk Klum. The remaining roles were played by both native and foreign actors, including Maja Szopa, Sandra Drzymalska, Caroline Hartig, Victor Meutelet, Maurycy Popiel, Robert Gonera and Hanna Śleszyńska.
Many were surprised by the passionate bed scenes, certainly unsuitable for a young viewer. And it must be admitted that “Filip” touches on many educational threads, useful for implementation during school lessons, although the wartime reality shown in it is far from the one depicted by other titles of this genre, as it lacks martyrdom or heroism. For this reason, the decision was made to create a censored version specifically for educational institutions. The success of the film also attracted the interest of the popular streaming platform Netflix. Already on August 9, 2023, “Filip” joined the website’s library and at the moment it collects positive reviews among users.
