They were stealing identities, and death was at stake. The trailer of the new film by the creator of “Wielka Woda” raises concern

“One identity, two biographies. There was a special kind of spies in the Polish military intelligence – their method of operation was identity theft, and the stake was the death penalty” – we read in the announcement of the latest film by Jan Holoubek. The psychological thriller “Doppelgänger. Doppelgänger” inspired by Hollywood stories has already had a trailer.

Jakub Gierszał and Tomasz Schuchardt played the main roles in the production. They are partnered by Wiktoria Gorodeckaja, Katarzyna Herman, Andrzej Seweryn, as well as foreign stars – Emily Kusche, Joachim Raaf, Nathalie Richard and Jessica McIntyre. The film will open the 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. It will hit theaters on September 29, 2023.

“Doppelgänger. Doppelgänger” with a trailer. When is the premiere of the movie?

“Generally, there are two types of spies. Some simply operate under their names, work in embassies, for example as consuls. The Doppelgänger method is much rarer and more risky. These are people who operate undercover, with changed, usually stolen personal details – they blend into society. During the time of the Iron Curtain, ‘followers’ functioned on both sides and would be exposed to serious consequences if they were caught – including death sentences,’ says Jan Holoubek about the film.

For the creator, this is not the first work on a story based on facts. We already know the director from “25 Years of Innocence. The Matters of Tomek Komenda” and the critically acclaimed series “Wielka Woda”.

“Must see to be convinced”

“Such a long-term operation in secret reflects on the protagonist, his psyche, the way he perceives the world and how he functions. You have to see the film to see how Hans handled it,” says Jakub Gierszał, who will play one of the main roles.

The film takes viewers back to the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, and its action takes place on both sides of the Iron Curtain at the same time. Hans Steiner (Jakub Gierszał) lives in lively Strasbourg, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the West. He blends in with the local community while conducting espionage activities. Jan Bitner (Tomasz Schuchardt) lives with his family in Gdańsk and works in a shipyard. Seemingly, nothing connects the two men, but the past hides a secret that will force them to face their own weaknesses and passions. Both will face the question of their identity.
