The United States Justice has sentenced rapper Tory Lanez to 10 years in prison for shooting singer Megan Thee Stallion in the feet in 2020 as she left a party. Last December, the jury found the rapper guilty of all the charges filed against him, pending hearing the sentence, which was announced on the second day of the hearing, this Tuesday, August 8.

“If I could go back, I would change the series of events of that night (…). She was my friend [Megan Thee Stallion] and he’s someone I still care about to this day,” the Canadian rapper declared before the sentence, according to US media reports. His legal defense had requested that a probation or a minimum prison sentence be considered. However, the judge of Los Angeles Superior Court, David Herriford, dismissed the petition: “Sometimes good people do bad things (…). actions have consequences and there are no winners in this case,” he said.

The jury indicted the Canadian rapper, whose name is Daystar Peterson, for assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle and for discharging a firearm with gross negligence. All the charges could add up to 22 years in prison, while the Prosecutor’s Office had requested a 13-year prison sentence for the 30-year-old singer.

On the first day of the session, Los Angeles County Assistant Attorney Kathu Ta was responsible for reading a statement on behalf of Megan Thee Stallion, who did not want to be present. “Since the defendant shot me, I have not had a single day of peace,” she assured, and although she maintains that she is “healing,” she is aware that she “will never be the same.” Megan also asked that her absence not be taken as a sign of indifference, but as what she was: the inability to be in the same space with the rapper.

During the trial, Megan Pete (real name Megan Thee Stallion) testified that in the summer of 2020 Lanez fired a pistol towards the back of his feet and yelled at her to dance as she walked away from the car in which the two had been traveling through the Hollywood Hills. According to the singer’s version, the event took place after the two had had an argument in which she insulted the rapper’s music. Megan had to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

Before the judges’ deliberation, Lanez’s lawyer argued that the shots were actually fired by Megan’s then-best friendKelsey Harris, in a jealous fight over Lanez, but Harris denied being the shooter and previously identified Lanez as the gun wielder.

Prosecutors emphasized the courage Megan, 27, had in coming forward. Thee Stallion became one of the breakout rappers of 2020 for the song ‘Savage’, which went viral thanks to a choreography imitated by thousands of users of the TikTok social network.

Lawyers for Lanez, who has been in prison since his conviction, attempted a retrial claiming that Megan’s testimony about his client asking him not to go to the police because he was already on probation was false.

They had also argued that the DNA evidence used by prosecutors to identify Lanez as the shooter was not strong.

The rapper’s career began in 2009 and, after this event, he released albums such as ‘Alone At Prom’ or ‘Playboy’, both released in 2021, which led him to continue increasing his number of listeners. Currently, he has more than 23.5 million reproductions monthly only on the Spotify platform.

Megan Thee Stallion managed to win the Grammy for best new artist in 2021 and her singles ‘Savage’, with BeyoncĂ©, and the collaboration ‘WAP’, with Cardi B, reached number 1 on the charts at times. USA.
