He asked ChatGPT for help in writing the script. The answer left him speechless

For some time, almost the whole world has been talking about the strike of screenwriters and Hollywood actors. One of its important aspects is the issue of artificial intelligence and its use in the film-making process. Meanwhile, Nicolas Winding Refn – a Danish director, film producer and screenwriter – confessed that he tried to write a script using the ChatGPT chatbot. The AI’s response left him speechless.

Nicolas Winding Refn is a famous Danish director and screenwriter, the creator of such productions as “Drive”, “Neon Demon” and “Dealer”. Some time ago, in an interview with IndieWire, he confessed that he tried to use ChatGPT to write the script. In response, the artificial intelligence sent him to a specialist – and it’s not a professional screenwriter – because it decided that he “needed help”.

The response of the artificial intelligence surprised the artist

– If you start asking controversial questions or discuss topics that are not currently accepted, ChatGPT shuts down. I ran into this problem very quickly: every time I asked something, I got the answer “I can’t comment on it” or “seek specialist helpSometimes even “call this hotline”, says Nicolas Winding Refn of IndieWire. The artist also felt that if someone’s work was accepted by “some chat room”, it is a clear sign that the text needs correction.

“I argued with him all the time”

Nicolas Winding Refn also talked about the backstage of cooperation with artificial intelligence in an interview. – The experiment itself was very interesting for me. I was hoping to use ChatGPT creatively, but it ended up being that I argued with him all the time the screenwriter confessed. So I stopped using it and that’s it.

Refn also recognized that artificial intelligence in creative work can be helpful, but only as a tool used from time to time. Especially when it comes to creating content that aspires to be a product of mass culture – in the case of high culture and art itself, artificial intelligence will not cope. “The less deep the content is, the easier it is to replicate,” concluded Refn.
