You don’t know what Barbie and Oppenheimer have in common? You haven’t been online for a long time

On the same day, two films with completely different themes enter the world cinemas: the painfully pink “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig and the dark “Oppenheimer” from Christopher Nolan, which will bring the viewers closer to the biography of the creator of the atomic bomb. The double premiere of such famous productions was quickly hailed as the most important event of this summer and a new trend was born – Barbieheimer, which also has a double bottom.

The juxtaposition of productions looks so abstract that viewers from all over the world are already getting ready to watch both titles in one day. Trailers of a fictional movie combining both characters in one world and memes are also abounding on the web. Lots of memes. Barbieheimer has taken over the internet and ignites the imagination of viewers, who spill more jokes, as well as excellent plans for a cinematic feast. The fun part is that in one day you must watch both Greta Gerwig’s pink film and Christopher Nolan’s potentially epic, though undoubtedly depressing, Oppenheimer. At the same time, it is best to emphasize the deep dissonance between the subject of production, e.g. clothing. People are already planning that dressed in pink from head to toe, they will buy tickets for “Oppenheimer” with deadly seriousness, or vice versa – wrapped in black or other studs, they will discover the charms of Candy Land.

What’s the deal with Barbie and Oppenheimer? Barbieheimer is a celebration of cinema

However, Barbieheimer has such a great impact not only because on the same day productions packed with major Hollywood stars with budgets over $ 100 million compete for the highest viewership. from competing manufacturers. There’s a lot more to the puzzle that makes people have so much fun right now, and the stars of both productions say they’ll also spend the day doing a double screening. It all started sort of by accident when the news broke that Ryan Gosling would play Ken. The Canadian actor enjoys great popularity among viewers and with parities.

He is loved by both men and women – the latter, for example for his role in “Balde Runner 2049” by Denis Villeneuv. And just one of the lovers of this epic production released a humorous meme to the network one day. In it, he announced that he would sacrifice himself for Ryan Gosling and would watch “Barbie” because of him – a film that he probably would not have chosen to see in other circumstances. Although it is worth recalling that the director Greta Gerwig has the Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” or the enthusiastically received film adaptation of “Little Women”, and she wrote the screenplay for “Barbie” with Noah Baumbach.

It was also then that proposals began to pour in that viewers should dress as pink as possible for the screening of the film about the iconic doll – eventually the creators of the production admitted that when they were creating the set with Barbie Land, they used so much pink paint that they caused international shortages. Equally amusing to many is the contrast between Barbie and what the standard tough guy image looks like. On this principle, memes poured out depicting muscular and menacing-looking guys who, for example, say: “Four tickets to ‘Barbie’, please.”

And then it turned out that “Oppenheimer” will also hit the cinemas on July 21, and the context became even more interesting. Because there were also trailers combining both movies into one. Some bet on “Barbie” in the style of “Oppenheimer”, and others on “Oppenheimer” in the style of “Barbie”, so the slogan “Barbenheimer” also appears often. An interesting proposition is also, for example, a poster with Barbie and Oppenheimer as characters from the Oscar-winning “La La Land”:

One of the German cinemas has already used the situation to its advantage, offering viewers a special promotion and a combined screening of both productions.

Barbie vs Oppenheimer clash. What is the second bottom?

Many viewers believe that rival studios Universal Picture (“Oppenheimer”) and Warner Bros. (“Barbie”) chose the same day for the premiere of their flagship projects. Suffice it to recall that in 2008, during the same period, the joyful musical “Mamma Mia!” and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. It is also no secret that in 2021 the director of “Oppenheimer” parted ways with Warner Bros. after 19 years. Together, they released over the years: “Inception”, “Interstellar” or “Batman”, but after the premiere of “Tenet” a serious crisis appeared.

The production had a colossal budget of $205 million, but its premiere fell at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and the profits from ticket sales did not cover even half of these costs. The financial blow contributed to the fact that the studio decided to show its films in a hybrid mode, i.e. simultaneously showing them in cinemas and making them available on streaming platforms. Nolan was one of the biggest critics of the decision.

It is hardly surprising that many see a certain malice in the fact that Warner decided to release “Barbie” in theaters on the same day as Universal directed by Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”. Considering e.g. the fact that the film with Margot Robbie can be watched by viewers from the age of 13, and the story about the inventor of the atomic bomb can be watched from the age of 16, many predict that the production directed by Gerwig will have higher viewership. Interestingly, “” reports that the American cinema chain AMC has already sold 20,000 tickets to viewers who go to the screenings of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day.

What do actors and creators think about Barbieheimer?

Surprisingly, Christopher Nolan is delighted with Barbieheimer. Speaking to IGN, he stated: “Summer, when the market is healthy, theaters are always crowded. I think those who love cinema like me have been waiting a long time for it to be full of viewers and competition again. Now we have it again and it’s great,” he said. Cillian Murphy, who plays the title role in Oppenheimer, agrees:

I think it’s great. I’m going to go see Barbie, I can’t wait to see the movie. It has done a great thing for the industry and audiences that we get two amazing movies from great creators on the same day. You can spend the whole day at the cinema, what could be better?

He also told the Spanish daily La Vanguardia: “I love Margot Robbie, I love Ryan Gosling. I want to see them now!” Matt Damon, who played Oppenheimer, also expressed his satisfaction, who in an interview with IGN emphasized: “I’m delighted that people want to see two movies in one weekend. Ben Affleck and I used to do that, we went to the cinema for two movies in every weekend, and I think people should do that too.”

What order should you watch Barbie and Oppenheimer in? Issa Rae, who played Greta Gerwig in the film, advised in an interview with , that viewers should first watch “Oppenheimer” and then go to “Barbie” to cheer themselves up. Murphy suggests flipping a coin, and Margot Robbie proposes “Barbie” first, then “Oppenheimer”, then “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” on top of each other to see which setup suits who better. Everyone agrees that cinema wins anyway in such a situation.
