Radishes are best sown in early March. It is ready to harvest 3-4 weeks after planting. Thanks to the short growing season, it can be sown regularly and enjoy its taste throughout the spring and summer. Radish also has an additional advantage: its pungent smell repels pests such as aphids, beetles and ants.

Growing radishes. What is worth paying attention to?

Radish likes light, fertile and humus soil. It feels best in a well-shined place and does not tolerate frost well. You have to be careful not to overwater the plant, because excess water promotes diseases and deformation of the root. Seeds are sown in rows every 5 cm. The sowing depth should be 1 cm. The vegetable can be sown not only in March, but also in April, August and the first half of September. The substrate should always be moist, but not wet. You also need to regularly weed the soil and loosen it.

Why is radish bitter? Two reasons

it has a characteristic, sharp aftertaste. If the radish is bitter, it is most likely due to improper watering or a late harvest. Radish roots contain mustard oil, the level of which rises when the plant is dry and lacks water. The high level of oil turns the pleasant, spicy flavor of the radish into bitterness. The plant should be exposed to the sun for 8-10 hours a day. If it continues for a long time, its roots will quickly become old and bitter. To avoid this, it is best to cover the crops with an opaque material, e.g. agrotextile.
