It was 1955. It was then that the propaganda World Youth Convention was organized in Poland, attended by the American actress Eleanor Griswold. Thus, she brought on herself considerable problems, because, as it turned out, she did not receive permission to leave. She was summoned several times for questioning at the American embassy, and she was threatened with immediate deportation. Only marriage with a Pole could save her from the oppression. The film critic, Zygmunt Kałużyński, who fell in love with her, offered his help without hesitation. She agreed.

Initially arranged, it resulted in a real feeling. The American star quickly gained interest among the Polish social cream. After she voiced Teresa Tuszyńska in the production of Janusz Morgenstern “Goodbye, until tomorrow”, other professional offers poured in, including the one from The director offered her a role in his film, although he did not really intend to cast her, but only to fall in love in itself. He did not mind the fact that the actress, 30 years his junior, is married, he was married himself and had a child. Discussing a potential script quickly led to a fiery romance, which then turned into love. Ford left the family, and Griswold left Kałużyński.
Soon after, the actress became pregnant and gave birth to Ford’s daughter, Konstancja. Kałużyński was furious. He began to demand recognition of his paternity, because they were still technically married. There was no shortage of scuffles, insults and Dantesque scenes in the courtroom. Apparently, during one of the hearings, he and the critic threw themselves at each other’s throats. Ultimately, his application was rejected. Then Kałużyński chose the destruction of Ford’s career as a point of honor. He criticized his productions, diminished their values. There were rumors that he would even appear at the director’s house wrapped in a white sheet and scare him by pretending to be a ghost.

When Griswold finally got her divorce after a four-year legal battle, she thought she’d finally find peace. In the meantime, she gave birth to a son, Roman, and later another daughter, Justyna, appeared in the world. The couple also got married. The idyll did not last long, however. In the late 1960s, as a result of the anti-Semitic campaign – Ford was of Jewish descent – they decided to leave Poland and go to the West. They lived, among others in Denmark and Israel. She took care of the house, he tried to develop a career in the film industry. Ultimately, the attempts ended in a fiasco, which he experienced severely. He wanted to take his own life. The actress wanted peace for herself and her children, so she decided to return to the US and filed for divorce. – I felt that in this way I would help him, that he would focus and write something, because he could not write for a long time – later.
The marriage finally broke up on February 14, 1980. Less than 2 months later, Alexander Ford committed suicide by hanging himself from a chandelier in a hotel in Florida. The day before, he gave the cleaner $100, asking her to clean up the mess he left the next day. He also recorded two cassettes: one for his ex-wife and one for his daughter. Their content was never revealed, because Griswold destroyed them right after listening.
