Aleksander Kwaśniewski was the president of Poland in the years 1995-2005 and until now he is considered by his compatriots as one of the most popular politicians in the country. Although today he is perceived more as a diplomat than a politician, he constantly monitors the political situation in the country and in the world, which is why he is often featured in various media.
After being president for ten years, he was fed up with information from everywhere
Recently, he gave an interview to Anna Kalita from , in which he told a lot about the unique relationship with his wife Jolanta Kwa¶niewska and how the media had changed since the end of his presidency.
At the beginning of the conversation, he confessed that when he held this important office, the media accompanied him literally everywhere. “The news was all the time. From the very morning. In the news car, in the news house. Anyway, it was from television, specifically from CNN, that I learned about the September 11 attacks,” said Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
This statement is an extension of the previous statement, when the former president said that after the end of his term, he often rested in Switzerland in winter. He had good contact with the owner of the quarters, who, realizing who he was dealing with, offered Kwaśniewski to connect Polish television. However, the former Polish president was not delighted with the idea. “If you do this, I will stop renting an apartment from you,” Aleksander Kwaśniewski quickly summed up.
Later in the interview, he admitted that today he no longer feels so stimulated by information, but he values access to foreign media much more due to greater objectivity and the possibility of communing with the English language:
I like watching foreign media – today more the BBC, which is not ideologized and remains objective – because I am interested in global information, and an additional benefit is constant contact with English. Something always comes to mind there, said Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
The former president also drew attention to the changes that have taken place in the paparazzi profession since 2005. He confessed that even many years after the end of the presidency, he and his wife were in the tabloids’ crosshairs. His wife, Jolanta Kwaśniewska, was also a TV star at the time and hosted the “Lekcja Styl” program on TVN Style.
Aleksander Kwaśniewski recalls how the dogs chased the paparazzi
The paparazzi dressed in camouflage clothes so as not to be seen, and hid in the bushes. Well, dogs have a good sense of smell. And since we were walking in a place where no one was, and they walked without a leash, when they sensed them, they started running. And they screamed and ran away, recalls the former president.
Aleksander Kwaśniewski admits that a lot has changed since then and today anyone can be a paparazzi due to the spread of smartphones and access to the Internet. In the conversation, he mentioned one situation when a stranger photographed him and his wife while they were resting on a boat. He spoke to the person and asked her not to publish the photo, but it ended up in the tabloids anyway.
He stated that such a situation should not occur when as a public figure he spends time privately and even shared an idea on how such situations could be stopped. “There would be only one solution: to include in the press law that materials obtained illegally cannot be published, and if they are, the publishing house pays a fine. I have no complaints if I am in a public situation – let me be photographed. shall we sunbathe or shall we go swimming?” he concluded.
