– Drunkenness, aggression, thoughtlessness and stupidity. And it’s getting worse. How many times have we had to call the police – says Loewenau. The peak of the tourist season is approaching. However, some rescuers from the Baltic Sea would probably try a different phrase: the top of everything.
The main tourist sins of Poles: pride
At the remarks and admonitions of lifeguards, sunbathers will nod their heads – at best. Sometimes they won’t respond at all. – We ask, we admonish, we threaten and what do we hear? And kiss yourself on … (…) Parents sit behind screens, with their noses in their phones and children are not supervised at all – says the president of WOPR in Gniew with Dziennik Bałtycki. He also recalls many other unpleasant situations and words that almost threw him off balance.
“You are here to guard” – said the father who lost his child on the beach. Some tourists assume that rescuers are “only doing their job” and thus do not deserve a word of gratitude, despite the fact that they sacrifice their lives for someone many times. – “Thank you” is rarely heard, because it is our duty. If we point out “where have you been that the child has managed to walk a kilometer”, they will say that we are on our heels – says Loewenau.
“If you pay attention, they still throw profanities”
Another problem pointed out by the lifeguard is the fact that tourists often take a “classic” set to the beach, which includes a screen, a blanket and… beer. Although it is known that the beach is a public place and alcohol is not allowed on it, some vacationers do not even hide with a bottle on a blanket. The most dangerous, however, are situations in which someone, after consuming a high-proof beverage, comes up with the idea of swimming in the sea.
– And if you pay attention, it’s still they throw profanities to keep an eye on their work. They believe that if they drink two or three beers, nothing will happen – says the lifeguard. After a while, his friend adds: – Such people can’t always be saved. Recall that about 70% of recorded drowning cases are caused by alcohol abuse.
