The dubbing sector has been put on alert before the increasing advance of the artificial intelligence, which is already capable of giving voice to any animate or inanimate being. Technology clones our voices and for this reason, they ask to regularize this technology before it is perfect enough.
There are more and more websites that allow you to upload an audio to the system and in just a few seconds, although the voices in our language are not quite perfect. José Varela, UGT spokesman for Communications and Culture, tells us that more than 5,000 people work in Spain for the dubbing sectorwho fear that the eagerness of studios to make productions profitable will make them bet on this technology.
It should be remembered that these studios offer the cheapest price for dubbing in Europe: between 35,000 and 40,000 euros per film of distribution. The voice actor Jon Samaniego adds that there are clauses in some contracts in which the actors give up their rights so that their voice can be used “with current technologies or that are developed later.”
Simultaneous translation, or even communication, are other trades in which artificial intelligence can change the entire production system. A recent example is the company Domestikathat has fired 89 translators to replace them with artificial intelligence.
“Employment is the economic centrality. If we lose our job, our capitalist system doesn’t work. We need an economic alternative when employment disappears due to technology,” says Varela.
