Atresmedia, award of excellence from the International Federation of Television Archives for the use of Artificial Intelligence in its document management

Atresmedia has been recognized with the Award for Excellence in Media Management (Excellence in Media Management Award) by the International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT / IFTA), in its 2021 edition. This award is given to projects of file technology they have experienced, developed and implemented technologies and tools in the management of television archives in a novel and efficient way.

The FIAT / IFTA Awards date back, in their first edition, to 1994. This year, the highest distinction in the treatment and management of audiovisual archives has been for the project of the Documentation area of Atresmedia, directed by Eugenio López de Quintana. Specifically, the jury has valued the innovation represented by the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence tools for the automatic cataloging of content and the paradigm shift that it represents in the conception of television documentary makers.

The use of artificial intelligence tools in Atresmedia document management has made it possible to automate processes such as voice-to-text transcription, speaker segmentation or facial recognition, automatically or semi-automatically generating high value-added metadata for searching and retrieving content in the Archive with a high level of precision.

With about 19,000 hours of video and more than 230,000 processed photographs, this project is situated leading both nationally and internationally in the use of these technologies applied to the automatic processing of audiovisual content, transferring the use of advanced algorithms from the field of R & D & I to real operating results.

At the same time, this work is serving to promote a transformation of the professional profile of the television documentary maker in Atresmedia, redirecting the manual effort of traditional information processing techniques towards greater involvement in the own production of audiovisual content from the Archive.

This recognition, which took place during the FIAT / IFTA Annual Conference in South Africa, held for the second consecutive year, in online format due to the pandemic, adds to the National Award for Quality and Innovation ‘Carmen Rodríguez Guerrero’, awarded in April of this year for the same project by the Spanish Information and Documentation Society (SEDIC).
