It was supposed to be “Kitbag” (inspired by Napoleon’s saying “There is a general’s staff hidden in every soldier’s kitbag”, but it will be “Napoleon”. On the set of the film, 20 years after “Gladiator”, director Ridley Scott and Joaquin Pheonix, who played the Roman emperor there and now will play the ruler of France, met. The premiere of “Napoleon” is scheduled for November 24.
“Napoleon” – see the trailer
Spectacular scenes, acting performances, and what catches your eye first? This Napoleon is so… tall. The short height of the emperor is legendary – historians estimate that he was 158 to 168 cm tall, while the 173 cm Phoenix in individual scenes does not stand out among other people in any way. The second thing is that – looking at the trailer – we can assume that Scott wants to show at least two decades of Bonaparte’s life: in 1795, when he sent troops against the protesting people of Paris, he was 26 years old, during the fighting in Russia in 1812 he was 43. Meanwhile, in every scene we see a slightly disguised 48-year-old. The question is how much we will believe the creators of “Napoleon” and the magic of cinema.
What is “Napoleon” by Ridley Scott about?
“Napoleon” is intended to be “an original and intimate look at Napoleon’s rapid climb up the ladder of power to the position of emperor, through the lens of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and true love, Josephine.” The role of the empress is played by, among others, from the Netflix series “The Crown” and the series “Mission: Impossible” Vanessa Kirby. The cast also includes Tahar Rahim, who will play Paul Barras, a politician and Josephine’s lover, and Youssef Kerkour, who plays General Davout.
In 2020, the producers also emphasized that the goal of Scott’s latest film will also be “capturing the famous battles of Napoleon, and at the same time the relentless ambition and astonishing strategic mind of an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.” I have to admit that even the scene with the frozen lake is impressive.
David Scarpa is responsible for the production script, and Dariusz Wolski is responsible for the cinematography. “The film will not lack spectacular war scenes, which no director shows better than Ridley Scott” – announces the Polish distributor.
