The owners of the Igela publishing house have decided to close it “due to financial problems”, as they explained in a note. Until December, they have made a commitment to publish the titles they have been working on (Joyce Carol Oates, Fiodor Dostoevsky, Adania Shibi, Zadie Smith and Annie Ernaux).
For 34 years, the Pamplona publishing house, founded by Xabier Olarra, Joseba Urteaga and Jose Manuel González, has carried out invaluable work translating into Basque works by Karl Marx, Agatha Christie, Pier Paolo Pasolini, James Joyce, Cormac McCarthy, Ursula K Le Guin , Natalia Ginzburg, Patrick Modiano, Amélie Nothomb, JRR Tolkien, Antonio Tabucchi, Annie Ernaux, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Antonio Lobo Antunes…
This work has been carried out by translators such as Xabier Olarra, Fernando Rey, Idoia Santamaría, Joxe Mari Berastegi, Koro Navarro, Pello Lizarralde, Koldo Izagirre, Isabel Etxeberria, Aiora Jaka, Itziar Díez de Ultzurrun, Joseba Urteaga, Garazi Arrula, Iñigo Roque, Juan Garzia, Asun Garikano, Matías Múgica, Ramon Etxezarreta, Amaia Apalauza…
Since 2012, Igela has been publishing the books in the Unibertsala Literature collection in collaboration with Erein.
In a note, Lander Majuelo, editor of Igela, wanted to thank “the translators, illustrators, authors of epilogues, layout artists and designers, proofreaders, friends of the Itxaropena printing press, book sellers and librarians, fellow other publishers, who have selflessly collaborated and, above all, the readers, because you have suffered and enjoyed our books. Because the book is, in reality, the reader’s work”.
