He is reluctant to talk about his private life. He rarely makes an exception
Magdalena Cielecka was born on February 20, 1972. She spent her childhood in the small town of Żarki-Letnisko in Silesia. She became an actress thanks to a Polish studies teacher who interested her in theater and her then boyfriend, for whom she participated in, among others, in essay competitions. After graduating from high school, she passed the Acting Department of the State Higher School of Theater in Krakow. As the first in the family, she decided to follow the artistic path. When she was 22, her father died. It wasn’t until a few years ago that she told me that he struggled with alcohol addiction for years, which eventually led to his death. Although, as she repeatedly emphasized, there was no violence at home, her parent’s addiction left its mark on her for years.
Magdalena Cielecka opens up about her father’s alcoholism. “In most families, it was a shamefully kept secret”
For the first time, she told about her father in “Pani”. As she noted, the 90s were not a good time to discuss difficult topics, even with the closest family. So she didn’t realize how much her dad’s addiction was affecting her. – Not much was said about the disease of alcoholism, in most families it was a shamefully kept secret. There was no family therapy, no psychology books. I had no tools to help myself – . This caused growing anger.
About how her father’s addiction affected her life and the choices she made in her adult life, she realized only years later, when she understood that she was an ACoA – an Adult Child of an Alcoholic, raised in a home where the addiction appeared. is a set of features, properties and behaviors repeated in people who have experienced alcohol addiction in the family. “When someone first told me about it, I felt like they were reading me like an open book.”
She forgave her father years later. Today he emphasizes that being an AA “is not a reason to be ashamed”
This opened her eyes and made her decide to forgive her father many years after his death. – I think I understood my father to some extent. I no longer judge him that he drank because he was weak or drank because he wanted it himself – she admitted in an interview with “Pani”, at the same time she also drew attention to various factors that influenced his addiction. And there could be many of them, from his parents, through his place of birth, to the sensitivity and problems he faced in life. As she admitted, she forgave him only after many years. Years later, she also decided to be honest about her childhood. – I am already open about my origins, the baggage with which I have been walking since childhood, about the house where I grew up – she emphasized in an interview
For Magdalena Cielecka, openness also has a therapeutic function in a way. – I stopped hiding that I am the daughter of an alcoholic, a child of ACoA. This is not a reason to be ashamed – in an interview with “Live”. Why is she being honest about her father’s addiction? As she herself revealed, “that’s how it should be.” She believes that thanks to openness she can give strength to other women with similar experiences.
