At one time, Wanda i Banda was one of the most popular on the Polish pop-rock scene. Its founder, Wanda Kwietniewska, has promoted many, including “Journey into the unknown”, “Hi-fi” or “Ordinary life”. Earlier, however, she performed with the Lombard group, thanks to which she gained recognition among listeners. How did her collaboration with musicians end?
She started her career at Lombard. It was not the musicians, but the manager who had the deciding vote
The beginnings of Lombard date back to 1979, when the Visit vocal group was established, which included, among others, Wanda Kwietniewska, Grzegorz Stró¿niak. Initially, vocalists in choirs of such artists as Krzysztof Krawczyk and Irena Jarocka. After their debut during the 17th National Song Festival in Opole, they adopted the new name Skandal, but eventually released their first album “Śmierć discotece” as the band Lombard. Their career was managed by Piotr Niewiarowski, who had his favorites from the beginning, and Kwietniewska definitely did not belong to this group. When she proposed that her “I want to forget”, which she created, hit the album, he did not agree.
– We, as young musicians and singers, didn’t have much to say. And he had his likes and dislikes. Małgorzata was clearly favored by him. At some point, both me and Grzegorz began to feel it strongly – she recalled in an interview for . Ultimately, it was proposed that Ostrowska should focus on her solo career, while Kwietniewska and Stróżak would continue to co-create Lombard. Although everyone liked the idea, the arrangements unexpectedly changed.
When she got to the hospital, she was kicked out of the team. The manager had no mercy
“It all happened in rather dramatic circumstances. she admitted years later. Before the concert in Kalisz, which was the last of the band’s tour, she became seriously ill and hospitalization was necessary. During her stay in the hospital, she was visited by her manager, but the meeting did not take place in a pleasant atmosphere. “I was lying in a hospital bed, unable to speak, and heard that I would no longer sing at Lombard. I just croaked: “I’ll show you yet!”. Of course, I was totally devastated and devastated. I thought I was going to die in that hospital,” she recalled when she found out she had been expelled from the group. “They wrote me off overnight, and I ceased to exist for them,” she said bitterly.
Finally, a few months later, Kwietniewska founded her own band Wanda i Banda, with which she quickly began to achieve success. Despite this, the former manager threw logs at her feet several times, including blocking her performance at the Festival in Opole. However, she explained that she had no grudge against her colleagues from Lombard, because they had no influence on it. “I’m glad I have a clear conscience and can look every musician I’ve ever worked with in the face,” she said.
