The Twitter and Instagram timelines reflect, starting today, Wednesday, at noon, many messages from creators who, in a coordinated action, warn of the “return” of censorship, demand “the protection of fundamental rights” and affirm that “without culture there is no democracy”.

“Professionals from the world of culture want to denounce the return of censorship that is violating freedom of expression, a socially and democratically consolidated right in our Constitution,” says the base text (each one has published it as has wanted), disseminated mostly in Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque.

Some of the participants in the initiative have been Eneko Sagardoy, Ane Pikaza, Itziar Ituño, Olatz Salvador, Montxo Armendariz, Katixa Agirre, Edurne Azkarate, Andrea Jaurrieta and associations such as the SGAE, the General Society of Authors and Publishers.

The initiative came from women in the performing arts in response to the cancellations of plays in recent weeks in Spain: the play “Orlando”, by Virginia Woolf, by the Valdemorillo City Council (Madrid); “The sea: vision of children who have never seen it”, inspired by the story of the republican teacher Antonio Benaiges, in the Burgos municipality of Briviesca; the request of the municipal group of Vox in Getafe (Madrid) to remove “sexual insinuations” from the play “La Villana de Getafe”, written by Lope de Vega…
