Danuta Szaflarska was born in 1915 in Kosarzyska. When she was 9 years old, her father unexpectedly died of appendicitis. She and her family had to move to Nowy Sącz. She did not like her new place of residence. Only when she got to the Warsaw Theater School did she feel that she had found her place on earth. She fell in love with the city and acting.
In 1936, she met her first husband, Jan Ekier. The man was an outstanding pianist and fell in love with a young and beautiful artist. Szaflarska graduated in 1939, and soon after made her debut at the Na Pohulance Theater in Vilnius. When the war broke out, Ekier set off on a journey to Vilnius. For 6 days he was carrying wedding rings for his beloved. Although the woman did not want to get married, she accepted the proposal because of the pianist’s touching journey. – I agreed. Well, then I cried for two days over the piece of paper that took away what I thought was my freedom – in one of the interviews. In 1943, their daughter Maria was born. Their marriage, however, did not last. “My husband left me, we couldn’t get along, he saw me as a housewife and I wanted to play,” she said.
She devoted herself to acting. She was on stage almost until the last days
Szaflarska loved , and viewers loved her game. In total, she appeared in about 180 film and theater roles. She made her debut on the big screen in the production of “Forbidden Songs” and gained a lot of fans. She established her position as one of the first ladies of Polish cinema with participation in such films as Treasure, Doll or Pożegnanie z Maria. In 2006, at the age of 91, she also played in the previously mentioned “Ranch”.

She didn’t want to retire. Theater was like a drug to her. She changed her mind for health reasons. When she was 101 years old, she broke her hip during one of the rehearsals at Warsaw’s Jewish Theater. It wasn’t until 2016 that she decided it was time to say enough when she was hospitalized again. When people asked her about the secret of her longevity, she didn’t know the answer. – I’m not doing anything special. I just love life in all its colors, shades and shadows. Life is a miracle – in one of the last interviews before death. Danuta Szaflarska died at the age of 102 on February 19, 2017.
