For over a decade, this group from the capital has been cultivating a following and making its way onto the local independent music scene. During this journey they have managed to participate in national and international festivals, reaching the point of being one of the first bands to be mentioned when they talk about indie Ecuadorian.
Last Thursday saw the light blue residencehis third studio album. This work, which consists of ten songs and lasts about forty minutes, showed that the music of the pawn (as Da Pawn is also called) is like fine wine: getting better and better with time.
Mauro Samaniego (voice, guitar), Alejandro Naranjo (guitar), Martin Samaniego (guitar, percussion), Fernando Procell (bass), Felipe Andino (keyboard) and Peter Ortis (drums) are the ones that stand out in the current formation of da pawn (@da_pawn), which sometimes returns to the band’s origins with a indie relaxed, over the course of songs like doom party, buttons, tulcan, among other things, a change of generation is observed thanks to an excellent musical production that allows each instrument to be perceived. In addition, the impeccable sound of string and wind arrangements that give the different melodies more personality.
From start to finish, this new album can be used perfectly as the soundtrack of a trip. This can be earthy or introspective. The deep lyrics of the leader Mauro Samaniego they lend themselves to that.
It is worth noting that the last number, called Rocket shipis the ideal conclusion, as it expresses a theatricality that undoubtedly marks the end of this interesting project.
It is worth noting Da Pawn’s courage to release a ten track album, at a time when the public is used to consuming only singles or EPs. From Quito the fight continues so that independent music gets the place it deserves. (OR)
