Irena K. was a young girl from a poor family. There was no money at home, so Irena was forced to quit school and go to work. She found employment in a local dairy, where she met Mieczysław T., and although Irena thought she had met the love of her life, she did not expect that the man was the beginning of tragic changes in her life.
Instead of studying, she went to work. There she met Mieczysław
Mieczysław seemed to be staring at Irena like a picture, and despite the objections of Irena’s parents, the girl did not end the relationship. She didn’t realize she had a serious drinking problem. She believed in his assurances about the common future and was not even alarmed by Mieczysław’s reaction to the news of the pregnancy. He didn’t seem pleased and soon stopped talking to her.

Irena tried to influence him, but to no avail. One day, when Irena met Mieczysław in the street, he told her that he was going to serve a prison term soon and she would certainly be better off without him. In those days, a lonely girl with a child was the subject of gossip and finger pointing. Irena’s parents were terrified of the reaction of neighbors and friends, so they sent the girl to her aunt on the other side of Poland. There Irena gave birth to a daughter, but from the beginning she could not love this child. She thought she was too young to be a mother. She had no support from her parents, and letters sent by her father to her daughter were found in her aunt’s house. He not only persuaded her to murder the child, but also announced that if he appeared in the village with the child, he would bring disgrace on the whole family. In one of the letters:
God will not charge you a lot of guilt, because a child raised without a father will only have better, so it’s better for him to die. Do as we advise you. Don’t cover her at night in a cold room. Don’t feed. She will die and be better.
Deprived of any help, she made a decision. She threw her daughter into the well
When Irena’s daughter was two months old, the girl decided to go to her cousin. The family took her to the station. A few weeks later, the police knocked on the door and announced that Irena had been arrested on suspicion of murdering her daughter. The militiamen found the letters that my father had been sending to Irena, so he was arrested as well. In the course of the investigation, it turned out that Irena, while waiting for the train, had thrown the girl into a well by the road. The court in Olsztyn, taking into account the young age of the girl and the difficult life situation, issued a sentence of 5 years in prison and 7 years in prison for the father. A review in the Supreme Court abolished the penalty of up to 2 years in prison for Irena and 5 years in prison for her father.
