The first Opener Festival did not take place in Gdynia. Not only ticket prices have changed over the years

Opener is one of the biggest festivals in Poland. The event has been organized every year for over two decades and enjoys unflagging interest of music fans. What was the first edition like? A lot has changed.

2023 can officially be considered started. This year’s event again gathered real crowds in Gdynia, who came to admire the greatest music stars. Today, it is a world-class event, but few know that when the first edition was held over 20 years ago, rather niche artists performed on the stage. See how it looked at the beginning.

The beginnings of the Opener Festival. Who performed at the first concert?

Popular not only among Poles, the festival started with a one-day event organized under the banner of Open Air in 2002. The event was then held in Warsaw on the Stegny track, not in Gdynia, as it is now. It was completely new and no one knew what to expect. Despite this, many music fans gathered in front of the stage to see the performance of m.in. electronic group The Chemical Brothers, for which it was the first time in front of the Polish audience. Apart from the band, Smolik, Glasser and MK Fever also played.

The organizers were satisfied with the number of tickets sold, and the idea was also liked by the recipients, which is why a decision was made to continue the project, the next editions of which took place in the famous town on the Baltic Sea.

Music fans were delighted. The organizers decided to continue the festival

The year 2003 was a breakthrough. At the end of July, it was organized in Gdynia, then still on Kosciuszko Square, and, like the first time, it lasted only one day. Tickets for Heineken Music l, because that was the name of the event, could be purchased for PLN 45 on the day of the concert or for PLN 35 in advance.

The stage was then performed by the French duo Cassius, which at one time was called “the revelation of the house”. Its founders and members are Philippe Cerboneschi, known as Philippe Zdar, and Hubert Blanc-Francard, known to the public as Boom Bass. However, they were not the only stars of the event. Kosheen and the British DJ duo Layo&Bushwack appeared on stage. The performers who became the finalists of the international competition Heineken Music Thirst also made a sensation. Among them were: Father Karol, Zolvik, Flex, Mr. Eddie D.
