Freddie Mercury had an exceptional voice. He was convinced that it was due to his defect

Freddie Mercury is still considered one of the best singers in the history of popular music. Undoubtedly, he had a very characteristic vocal and a very unusual timbre for rock singers. In addition, he had a scale of four octaves – he was supposedly convinced that his unusual sound was related to the specific structure of the jaw and hyperdontia.

Not everyone knows this, but F had four extra teeth. These grew on the back of his jaws and pushed his front teeth out, creating an overbite. It is a malocclusion, which consists in excessive protrusion of the upper dental arch – this feature has become one of the characteristic elements of the singer’s image. For years, he refused to remove it.

Freddie Mercury had a unique voice. He attributed it to his biological anomaly

Freddie Mercury learned to play the piano as a child. And although he maintained that he had never trained professionally in singing, he sang technically cleanly in really radically different styles. His natural sound was baritone, but he performed songs in tenor – he also sang lower in concerts than when recording for albums.

Freddie Mercury was fully aware that extra teeth affected his appearance. Also, his front incisors were much larger than normal. And although he was not happy with it, he never decided to correct the bite or remove the extra teeth. He was afraid that if he got rid of them or changed something about his jaw, it would also drastically affect the way he sings. And there was no way he could afford that.

Ba, Brian May, because of this malocclusion, almost did not accept Mercury to the band – he was afraid that his smile would make young listeners avoid them. He was convinced only by the argument that thanks to the extra teeth, Freddie has a larger vocal range.

Interestingly, to this day it is repeated that it was thanks to Merury’s teeth that the Sex Pistols became famous. In December 1976, Queen was supposed to appear on the show “” hosted by Bill Grundy. However, Freddie had a terrible toothache and had to make an emergency trip to the dentist. It was to be his first visit to the dentist’s office in 15 years.

It was also then that the Sex Pistols group appeared on television as a replacement – and it was a unique spectacle. The team then caused quite a scandal. According to the British public, the musicians behaved outrageously, they were even suspected of having played drunk.
