Aviation paralysis coming? All because of 5G. The Americans gave the date

US airlines still have five days to adapt their planes to the new reality. Otherwise, they may have trouble landing in poor visibility conditions. And all because of the 5G network.

The situation may seem absurd, but overseas airlines are definitely not laughing. US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg – as he writes – reminded carriers that without modernizing their equipment, they can face quite a problem. At least when they want to land at some airports in poor lighting conditions. It is certain that some fleets will not be prepared for time.

The 5G signal interferes with the operation of planes. Changes needed

From July 1, mobile operators in the US (AT&T and Verizon) will finally be able to offer connectivity to the 5G network on the so-called C band without any restrictions. Until now, due to a compromise with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), telecoms could not launch their transmitters near 50 key US airports around which buffer zones were created. This fact is mono who have been fighting for many months to introduce changes as soon as possible. The FAA, in turn, was concerned that 5G networks operating in this band would interfere with the work of on-board radio-based measurement tools (primarily the radio altimeter).

This tool is crucial in correctly reading altitude above the Earth’s surface, and pilots rely on it especially in difficult weather or lighting conditions. As he writes, carriers are not obliged to upgrade the radio altimeters in their machines until July 1, but – if they do not – they may have a real problem with servicing part of the routes in the USA. Pete Buttigieg pointed out that planes that are not certified to work in the vicinity of 5G transmitters will not be able to land in the dark at at least some US airports. Also in extremely difficult weather conditions, some carriers may be at risk of air paralysis due to piling up delays.

Most aircraft today are supposed to be immune to 5G on the faulty band even after July 1, but not all. The “WSJ” notes that 80 percent are prepared for changes. domestic fleet of machines, but at the same time as much as 65 percent. of foreign aircraft flying to the US still have not undergone modernization. For example, the key carrier on the US market, Delta Air Lines, is behind with adapting as many as 190 machines. The popular low-cost JetBlue needs to update much less, only 17 planes, but it also has a much smaller fleet. The world organization of carriers IATA (International Air Transport Association) stated in turn that non-US airlines on flights to the United States will try to use already modernized machines.
