José Antonio Sistiaga, last living artist of the Gaur Group, dies

The artist from San Sebastián José Antonio Sistiaga, the last living creator of the mythical Gaur Group, died this Sunday at the age of 91 at his home in Donibane Lohitzune (San Juan de Luz).

Sistiaga, one of the most prominent names in Basque art, had attended the opening of the “That Time” exhibition in Tabakalera last Thursday, he would have died of a heart attack.

Born in May 1932, he developed a career in which the experimental and nature occupied an important space.

In 1966 he founded the Gaur Group together with Amable Arias, Rafael Ruiz Balerdi, Nestor Basterretxea, Eduardo Chillida, Remigio Mendiburu, Jorge Oteiza and José Luis Zumeta, the latter who died in 2020 during the confinement decreed due to covid-19.

Last year, the Kubo room in San Sebastián dedicated the retrospective “De Rerum Natura” to him.
