Andrzej Wasilewicz is remembered not only for his role as Zenek Adamiec in Sylwester Chêciñski’s “Nie ma mocnych” and “Love or throw”, but also as the author of 200 ballads. In the 1980s, he interrupted his promising career and left for the United States. How did his life turn out?

Andrzej Wasilewicz has many episodic and supporting roles in his filmography. In “Misiu” he played a son accompanying his mother to the airport. He also starred in such productions as “Home”, “Alice”, “Ticket Back” and “More Than Survival”. However, many associated him primarily with the films “Nie mamocnych” and “Love or throw”. It was as Zenek Adamiec, Ania’s fiancé and later husband, that he was remembered by the fans forever.

On the screen, he partnered with Anna Dymna, and the viewers immediately fell in love with Zenek. He previously played this role in the TV series “Droga” directed by Sylwester Chęciński, in which Wiesław Gołas played a bus driver visiting the country. – People knew my face. They didn’t always know where. I heard on the street: You don’t remember, we were in the army together. And I have never been in the army – Andrzej Wasilewicz in “Życie na hot” and added that he was even called “Polish Marlon Brando”. He did not use this fame and popularity among female fans for fleeting romances.

At some point, the actor made a difficult decision to emigrate from Poland. In 1980 he left for the United States. There he studied film, worked at night to support his family and get funds to buy an apartment. – There was a lot of money from working as a bartender. It was a one-man theater for me. In America, the bartender plays the role of priest, psychologist, friend. I was a legend as a bartender – . Even the son of President John Kennedy was his client. He also developed his musical talent, gave concerts, e.g. for the Polish community in the United States, he still dreamed of returning to his country.

He was a famous bard. Andrzej Wasilewicz’s career was interrupted by Parkinson’s disease

The plans were thwarted by martial law. He supported “Solidarity” and composed ballads that were presented by Radio Free Europe. He has as many as 200 of them to his credit. Ultimately, he decided to stay in New York, although he visited Poland in the 1990s. In 1997, he appeared on the screens for the last time in the film “Happy New York”. Andrzej Wasilewicz died on December 13, 2016 in a New York hospital. A few years earlier he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. – I remember that he was always kind and smiling, positive about life and people. He remains in my memory as a big, warm and kind man. He died on the anniversary of martial law – Hanna Hartowicz, director of the Polish Film Festival organized in New York.
