For 7 years he imprisoned her in a wooden box under the bed. The story of Colleen Stan inspired the filmmakers

When he kidnapped her, he said that every man has a slave girl. Torture and rape were Colleen Stan’s everyday life for 7 years. Held in a wooden box, the woman experienced a nightmare every day and lost hope of regaining her freedom. Her dramatic story inspired the creators of the film “The Girl in the Box”.

In May 1977, 20-year-old Colleen Stan was scheduled to attend a friend’s birthday party. For this, she wanted to get to Westwood, California. To get there on time, she decided to hitchhike. After two failed attempts, the car finally stopped and she decided to get in. The driver was 23-year-old Cameron Hooker, and the passengers were his wife Janice and a child. Less than two hours later, it was revealed that the decision was the start of a 7-year-old young woman. “I don’t know how to explain what total darkness does to the human soul – many years later.”

He told her that all men had slave girls. When she believed, he allowed her to visit relatives

The gagged Colleen was rushed to the Hooker family’s home in Red Bluff, California. First, the torturer severely hurt her in the basement, and then locked her in a wooden box, resembling a coffin, which the spouses put under the bed in the bedroom. At first, she was only allowed to be outside for an hour a day. Her captor told her that being a slave was a common practice. For this purpose, he even drew up a deed of ownership, which Collen signed, declaring that she would follow all his orders. In case of disobedience, she was to be punished by the “Company”, which allegedly kept the precedent. Resigned, with no hope of improving the situation, she dutifully began to do what was required of her. Over time, “as a reward” for her submissiveness, she was given more and more freedom, she could e.g. run outside the property and even go to church. Neither the extended Hooker family nor the neighbors guessed that anything was wrong.

Hooker has been confident all this time and not afraid of the consequences. On one occasion, to test Colleen’s fidelity, he allowed her to visit relatives. He even personally drove her to her family home. Although the parents saw that the girl looked and behaved differently than before, they did not worry about her fate, because they were convinced that Hooker was her boyfriend. The nightmare would probably have lasted much longer, but Janice learned that her husband was going to marry a slave girl and abduct another woman. Upon learning of these plans, she was furious. In his absence, she revealed the whole truth to the girl and explained that what she believed was a lie. She then allowed Colleen to call her parents and drove her to the station, from where she left for her home town.

The story of a sadist and his victim shocked the whole world. A movie was made based on the life of Colleen Stan

After leaving the home of the perpetrators, Colleen Stan decided not to go to the police. Once she was safe, she called the torturer, informing him that she was leaving. Still, she couldn’t believe what had happened to her. Only Janice, who decided to testify against her husband in exchange for immunity, informed the servants about the crime. The case quickly went to court and in 1985 Cameron Hooker was sentenced to 104 years in prison.

The incredible Colleen Stan and the case of Cameron Hooker shocked not only the United States, but also the whole world. This became the inspiration for the filmmakers who depicted the fate of the woman in “The Girl in the Chest”. The production, written and directed by Stephen Kemp, hit the cinema screens in September 2016. The character of the abductee was played by Addison Timlin, and her tormentors were played by Zane Holtz and Zelda Williams. Other roles were played by Shileen Paton, Matt Cooke, Brittany Allen and Shawn Wright.
