Pep Tosar, the curator Sánchez of ‘La casa de papel’, arrives in Ecuador with a biographical show about Federico García Lorca

The staging will take place at the Centro de Arte Theater in Guayaquil and at the Sucre National Theater in Quito.

Actor, director and playwright are some of the facets of Spanish Pep tosar. On the Spanish screen, he has stood out with several characters and some of them have reached this side of the continent, as is the case of Commissioner Sánchez in the series The Money Heist or the movie The laws of the border, both available on the platform streaming.

Now not only will he be seen through his characters on the screens, but for the first time he arrives in Ecuador with a multidisciplinary work, in which the central figure is Federico Garcia Lorca. It is a biographical show essentially about the poet, which does not focus on the myth but on the human being. “The general public knows his tragic end, but I think that on few occasions the human being has been spoken of,” Tosar tells EL UNIVERSO from Valencia, Spain.

“The show begins in Fuente Vaqueros, in the small town where Lorca was born and follows his story through Granada, his student residence in Madrid, through his trip to New York, his stay in Cuba, his return to Spain and even that the fateful moment of his assassination by Franco’s troops arrives ”, he explains.

He also points out that the show makes use of a narrative that he has used in recent years biographing other poets who wrote in Catalan. “The case of Lorca is the first time that I have done a show in Spanish …”, he says.

The stage language that he uses for the show, according to Spanish, and that is mixed, is music, dance, documentary, acting performance. “I do a kind of symphony with all these languages ​​to try to get as close as possible to each of the vital, existential episodes of the biographed character …”, he points out.

On stage there will be a guitarist, a singer, a dancer and a percussionist, all flamenco, and the actor who is Tosar. “We perform behind a translucent screen and images are projected on that screen that mix with dance, text, and music. Some images appear that in the intervals are interviews not only with specialists in Federico’s work but also works as a narrative axis, We were able to interview his niece Vicenta Fernanda Montesinos García, who is the daughter of a sister of Federico, from Concha García Lorca, probably one of the few, if not the only person left alive in the world who knew Federico and who knew him very closely because he was his godfather and at the same time his uncle … ”, he says.

For the show, which will last 90 minutes, Tosar has used “a lot of prose by Federico García Lorca”. “In our show there is practically nothing of the rural dramas, there is nothing of Bernarda alba, from The prodigious shoemakerThere is a lot of poetry … There is a part of the theater, but it is also the least known part of Federico … the one that he, according to his own statements, liked and interested the most is what was called the impossible theater to which gigantic texts such as The Public, Untitled Comedy The how The Butterfly Hex… ”, he maintains.

“Not to disappoint” the Ecuadorian public is Tosar’s expectation with this staging. “We know that Federico is a very loved person in all of Latin America, I think he was not in Ecuador, but he had a great connection with South American culture and we know that especially through Federico’s stay in Argentina and Cuba that I had this connection … ”, he points out.

‘The Money Heist’

In the early seasons of The Money Heist, Tosar plays Commissioner Sánchez and the arrival of this character, according to the actor, “was something quite casual.” He tells that he was filming another series that has also been welcomed in Spain, The ministry of time. “My representative called me and said: ‘look, now when you finish here a van will pick you up and take you to another place where you are going to start shooting a character’ which is in The Money Heist, I said: ‘good, good’ ”, comments.

Laughing, he indicates that he studied his role in the journey from one studio to another to shoot the first sequence of The Money Heist. “I don’t know why things happened so hastily, but in my profession this happens on many occasions …”, he says.

The series became very popular and this, according to the Spaniard, neither he nor his colleagues expected. “When I filmed the first season, neither I nor anyone else could suspect that what happened with the series was going to happen, I mean no one, I mean neither the producer, nor the director, absolutely no one. The series had a normal, moderate course, but these things that the profession has, suddenly the series rises to international platforms and becomes one of the most viewed in history ”, he points out.

Something curious in the Tosar’s trajectory is that several of his papers have been linked to the police or commissioner as it was in The Money Heist or as it is in The laws of the border. On this, he says that in his private life he has no relationship with the police and that if he had it it would be a difficult one. “I am much more interested in poetry than in the police … I have done more than one commissioner, not all the same, at times I have made corrupt commissioners, but I have also played very austere, very legal policemen …”, he says. .

These characters are also joined by others and he says that last Wednesday, November 25, he finished recording the series Sicily without deaths, in which he plays a journalist doing political research.

‘The laws of the border’

On October 8, it was released The laws of the border in theaters in Spain and recently it came to Netflix. The film is directed by Daniel Monzón and adapted from the homonymous novel by Javier Cercas. She is nominated for the Goya awards in 21 categories, among them, as best film and best direction.

The story of the film, according to Tosar, focuses on the quinqui world of the 80s. “El quinqui was the young man who seeks life in the way (which was not correct). It was a very notorious movement in the 80s in Spain and this novel recreates this environment a bit ”, he explains.

Writer’s facet

In 2019 he published his work Who will do good works, which he wrote from the works of Anton Chekhov, Seagull and The cherry garden. The piece was staged at the National Theater of Catalonia.

In the field of writing too is working on his memories, of which the first part indicates is more or less resolved, but that there is still a lot to be recorded on paper. “I am going to try this spring to pick myself up in a city that I love, in Lisbon, to dedicate at least a couple of months to moving forward, I am not going to work on anything other than my memoirs, because the truth is that it is a real joy to write it , is to re-internalize in your memories, to have to investigate about yourself with your own family, from Argentina, from Mallorca, my friends from Barcelona … ”, he points out.
