The Bilbao LGTBIQ+ film and performing arts festival, Zinegoak, which this year is organized for the first time in June, celebrates its 20th anniversary with 50 activities related to culture and sexual diversity, and vindicating fluid identities.

In a press conference held at the Arriaga theatre, the Zinegoak team presented the complete program for this edition, which will take place between June 23 and July 3 and in which the honorary prize will be awarded to the Mexican filmmaker and actress Ángeles Cruz for her committed cinema with a strong social accent.

In addition to the projections scheduled in the Official Section, projections, colloquiums, performing arts, parties and concerts have been organized in various spaces in the capital with a marked festive and protest accent.

In the Official Selection of feature films, 16 films will compete in the three usual sections of the festival: FIK, DOK and KRAK. They will address issues such as sexual awakening, jouissance, recognition and the struggle to eliminate the hegemonic structures of oppression, among others.

“At night cats are brown” is one of the films in competition

Outside of the official competition, the “Erroak” cycle is maintained, in which several vascps short films will participate.

The festival will officially begin on June 26, with the opening gala to be held at the Teatro Arriaga, although from the 23rd there will be activities related to this edition of Zinegoak. The closing gala will be on July 3 in Bilborock and it will announce the winners of the festival.

During the weekend prior to the start of zinegoak, from June 23 to 25, the festival will celebrate the activities of “3, 2, 1… Zinegoak!”: projection of the documentary-essay Brainwashed: Sex, camera and power of independent filmmaker Nina Menkes, morning screening of Queer (Un)Belongings and the Bilborock premiere of the play “Gure garaian” promoted by Dantzerti and Musikene

In addition to screenings, Zinegoak will also host various complementary activities during the last week of June. The Foundry will host the play “Identitarteak” by the Gilkitxaro company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary on stage and will reflect on its own identities. In Hall 6 we can also enjoy a stage play, “Call it X”, an open essay and work in progress that tells the story of several LGTBIQ+ friends who intend to release various tensions by carrying out an orgy.

In BilbaoArte, for its part, two special sessions will be held: the presentation of the documentary my way out directed by Izaskun Arandia; and a retrospective of Ángeles Cruz, with the screening of Nudo Mixteco.
