Drew Barrymore was only six years old when she starred in Steven Spielberg’s cult hit “ET” and at the time she was pretty sure she was working on a set with a real alien. When the director found out that little Drew believed that ET was real, he made sure she didn’t suspect anything was wrong. “I really, really loved him very much,” the actress recalled on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the film’s premiere.

Drew Barrymore was only six years old on the set of “ET” and was the youngest member of the cast. “I really, really loved him in such a sincere and profound way,” she said during a meeting with the rest of the cast. Thomas, Wallace, and McNaughton started reminiscing about what she was doing between takes at the time. For example, one day when it was extremely cold, little Drew went to ask the lady in charge of the wardrobe if she would give her a scarf for the alien, because he has a very long neck and must be cold. What’s more, she got a scarf and went to dress her friend to keep him warm.

The little actress loved the animatronic puppet so much that she had lunch with her every day during the break and talked to her constantly. Dee Wallace, who played little Gertie’s mother in the film, then confessed: “We found you when you were talking to ET and we told Steven.” The director’s reaction was absolutely adorable:

Then Steven immediately assigned two people to revive the ETs whenever you approached him to talk.

No wonder Drew Barrymore’s eyes glazed over with emotion. The actress mentioned in one of the interviews that after a few weeks she noticed that some men were constantly hanging around ET and doing something to him. She then demanded that they leave the film set. again he rose to the occasion: “I didn’t want this bubble to burst. So I just said it’s okay, because ET is so special that he has eight assistants. As a director, I only had one,” recalls his words “Variety” . The director also made sure there was always someone on the set, just so Drew could have dinner with E.T.
