Her husband begged her to have a child. She replied: “An actress gives birth to roles, not children.”

– I gave birth to roles. These roles are my daughters – beautiful, crazy, smart, stupid. When I gave birth to Maria Stuart, I was so tired that I don’t think a physical birth would have cost me so much, wrote Nina Andrycz towards the end of her life in her autobiographical book “I Look and Remember”. The woman devoted almost her entire life to her professional career. In the name of acting, she also consciously gave up motherhood.

“An actress gives birth to roles, not children,” Nina Andrycz used to say when someone asked her about motherhood, and this happened relatively often. Especially since her husband had so often urged her – even begged her – to bear him a child. Andrycz, however, remained adamant.

Nina Andrycz does not regret giving up motherhood

More than anything, she loved the spotlight, new roles, and the stage—and she loved it, too. Nina Andrycz arranged almost her whole life in such a way that she would never run out of space for acting. In her autobiographical book I Look and Remember, she even mentioned: “Roles will never leave me, never let me downUnlike some men, the woman became involved with her husband, who was notoriously cheating on her. Despite this, the artist did not hide the fact that she had unwanted pregnancies at the beginning of her career – but none ended in birth.

“I was encouraged by my husband”

When Ewa Wachowicz was offered the position of a spokeswoman in the government of Waldemar Pawlak, she replied briefly, though eloquently enough that after some time the saying became popular and came into use: “The Prime Minister is not denied.”

But Nina Andrycz refused the prime minister, with courage and without a shadow of a doubt. Józef Cyrankiewicz was not only the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Poland, but also her husband. In many interviews, however, the actress claimed that she does not want and does not intend to become a mother.

– I was persuaded by my husband to slow down to have a baby. I would look nice now! If I had given birth, God forbid, a boy, today he would be said to be the son of a whore – admitted Andrycz in an interview with “Super Express”. Although some had doubts about it, years later, the artist confessed honestly that she did not regret giving up motherhood.

Instead of being a bad mother, I preferred to be a great actress

– she summed up in an interview for Polish Radio.
