“Sleeping Beauty from the Window” fell asleep as a 14-year-old. She woke up three decades later

The Swedish Karolina Olsson is called the “sleeping beauty from the Window”. In 1876, she was 14 when she fell into a coma that lasted three decades. The girl’s parents were convinced that someone had cast a spell on their daughter.

Karolina Olsson lived on a farm in Oknö with her parents and five siblings. On February 22, 1876, she returned from school and complained that she had a toothache. Parents told the 14-year-old to go to bed. So she did, but she woke up from sleep only after 32 years.

Karolina drank only two glasses of milk a day. She did not lose weight, and her nails and hair did not grow

The next day, when Karolina did not wake up, her parents started looking for help. The medic, Johan Emil Almblah, came to the Olssons’ house. He had never encountered such a case before. The girl looked alive and dead at the same time. Nails and hair did not grow, and despite the modest 2 glasses of milk a day, Karolina did not lose weight. For the next 6 years, no one could wake her from the coma or help her family diagnose the disease. Finally, the doctor transferred the girl to a ward at the hospital in Okarshamn, where she was given electroconvulsive therapy, but this too did not work. Despite the doctors’ opinion, she remained in touch with reality. In her sleep, she cried over her brother’s death, and sometimes sat on her bed and uttered the words of the prayer she had been taught as a child.

The maid entered the room and saw Caroline crawling on the floor. After 32 years, she thought she was still 14

4 years after Caroline’s mother died, a maid entered the room and saw “Sleeping Beauty” crawling on the floor. She tried to say something, but the words she spoke were unintelligible. The news spread quickly, and journalists and curious people came to the Olssons’ house, but Karolina did not understand the agitation. She thought she was still fourteen, when in fact she was 46. She woke up 32 years after the day she had a toothache.

What happened to Karolina Olsson? Doctors have not solved the mystery to this day

Doctors disagreed about the girl’s diagnosis. Some believed that Karolina was indeed in a coma in the first years, but she woke up from it and of her own free will did not react to the events that were happening around her, because she suffered from mental illness. Despite this, no one has yet explained why the girl has not aged at all. In 2011, a similar story happened to Beth Goodier, who was diagnosed with a neurological disease. The girl slept 22 hours a day and woke up to eat and go to the toilet. The disease is called Kleine-Levin syndrome. After waking up, Karolina Olsson lived for 40 years and died in 1950 of an intracranial hemorrhage.
