The writer cormac mccarthyone of the most outstanding novelists of the 20th century, has died this Tuesday at the age of 89, according to his son, John McCarthy, has confirmed to the newspaper The New York Times. McCarthy has died of natural causes, six months after the publication of his latest novels “The Passenger” and “Stella Maris” (they are two works, although they are sold in a single volume).
McCarthy is one of the best American writers of his generation (Philip Roth, Thomas Pynchon…), and, in his work, humanity emerges through brutality and bestiality, in the same way that some rays of light shine alone in the absolute darkness. All of this is also brought to paper through a dense, meticulous, lyrical and, at times, dreamlike prose. McCarthy strung together long sentences, where commas were scarce, to immerse the reader and lead her through the story of both brutal and ruthless murders and moving and heartbreaking descriptions.
McCarthy always placed his characters on the border, whether it was the geographic border between Mexico and the US (“No Country for Old Men”, “Meridian of Blood”, the Border Trilogy made up of “All the Beautiful Horses” , “On the border” and “Cities of the plain”), the border between adolescence and adulthood (the protagonist of “Meridiano de sangre” goes from being called “the boy” to being “the man”), between the real world and a post-apocalyptic world in which it rains ash (“The Highway”) and between humanity and bestiality (“Son of God”).
McCarthy published twelve novels in total, in addition to the play “The Sunset Limited” (a conversation between a person who has attempted suicide and the person who saved him) and several scripts, among which “The Counselor” stands out. , which was brought to the screen by director Ridley Scott and actors and actresses such as Michael Fassbender, Cameron Díaz, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt.
Born in Providence (Rhode Island, USA) on July 20, 1933, McCharthy lived quite retired; he barely offered interviews or appeared in public. His characters are also misfits, people – we should say almost absolutely men although the protagonist of “Stella Maris”, his latest novel, is a woman – who do not submit to social dictates.
In Basque, the Igela publishing house published in 2022 “Jainkoaren seme”, a translation by Juan Mari Mendizabal of the work “Son of God”, which has an epilogue by Anjel Lertxundi, an admirer of McCarthy’s work as well as other Basque writers such as Pello Lizarralde.
