Netflix is fighting, and Poles already have ways to bypass the ban on account sharing

This year, Netflix decided to fight hard for an increase in subscription revenues, and one of the ways is to tighten the bypass of the system, i.e. account sharing. Polish users are already sharing ways to circumvent the new regulations.

Account sharing on Netflix (which has also spread to other streaming platforms) has long been a common practice among users. Thanks to the fact that several people subscribed to a monthly subscription and used one or more profiles created within it, or that one paying person shared a password with several other non-residents, it was possible to save money. However, the company did not have the influence it hoped for, and therefore changed tactics some time ago.

They try to circumvent the rules

Netflix is no longer turning a blind eye to account sharing. In Poland, for several weeks they have been asking for confirmation that the device we use belongs to the household to which the subscription is assigned. After confirming membership, Netflix also sends emails to Polish users in this matter. If someone still wants to use account sharing with a person outside the household, they must pay an additional fee of PLN 9.99 per month.

It didn’t take long for advice to appear on the web proving that “a Pole can”… Instead of paying, some people try to circumvent the system again and share information on how to do it. Like the Wirtualne Media website, they advise, for example, to share the screen from the phone to the TV, because the restriction and the message apply to SmartTV devices. Others claim that they use the platform’s film and series offer without any problems when they enter the website through a web browser, and others use VPNs. For now, it is not known if and how Netflix will decide to close these gaps.

What about Netflix during the holidays?

According to the regulations, the account can be used by all persons living in the household – regardless of where they are staying, at home, away from home or on vacation. Netflix detects devices within a single household using IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity, not using GPS data. If we do not set the household ourselves, it will do it automatically. Importantly – also in the context of this text – the household does not need to be set if we do not watch Netflix on the TV.

If someone wants to set up their own Netflix account, there are several packages to choose from. The cheapest subscription is PLN 29 per month, the next thresholds for adding users from outside the household for PLN 9.99 are PLN 43 or PLN 60.
