Berlusconi was a construction entrepreneur who became involved in the media in the 1970s. In 1980, based on his cable TV Telemilano was the first nationwide private TV in Italy. In the late 1970s, he founded the Fininvest holding company. The media part became part of the Mediaset concern, which was also controlled by the Berlusconi family. Still in the 1980s, he acquired the TV stations Italia 1 and Rete 4. The holding also operated on the French, Spanish and German television markets in France, Spain and Germany. Berlusconi was also president and owner of the AC Milan football club (1986–2017) and a film and television producer.
He was a controversial politician, he was repeatedly impeached, e.g. on the so-called bunga bunga scandal. In 2011, a young employee of Berlusconi testified that she and other women participated in orgies organized at the politician’s residence. At first instance, the court sentenced Berlusconi to seven years in prison, but the court later acquitted him, pointing out that although he had paid for sex, he did not know that the woman was underage at the time. He also avoided prison on corruption charges. In 2013, he was convicted of for tax fraud and embezzlement of money from his concern, initially to four years in prison, then reduced to one year. However, he did not end up behind bars due to his advanced age.
