“Hugo” debuted on the air on September 3, 2000. Initially, the program was broadcast on Sunday mornings, in later years it was moved to Saturday. “You tried so hard, but you’re out of the game.” “Hugo” was a real hit
Children who got on the air had a chance not only to talk to the hosts and Hugo himself, but also to take part in the game. This one just seemed easy. The player controlled the character of the troll using the telephone keypad. Viewers, who in childhood with flushed faces and irritation watched the struggle of the participants, still remember the sequence of keys: “four” to the left, “six” to the right, “two” up and “eight” down. They also remember well the words that were used most often in the program: “You tried very hard, but you fell out of the game.”
Controlling the troll character was not easy. Hugo reacted with a slight delay, so players often fell straight into obstacles. You also had to remember to collect diamonds, thanks to which you gained points. After completing the route, in the final game the participant had to defeat the witch Scylla. As a result, he won the grand prize. However, even those who failed in the game could count on gifts. So no one was lost. – Children received gifts for about PLN 900 just for making a call. The charge was like for a standard call. During the game, they had a chance to get bicycles, a multimedia computer, and even a trip to Disneyland – recalled Andrzej Niemirski in an interview.
Only the lucky ones could take part in the game. “I dreamed of calling there and playing”
Calling the program was as difficult as controlling a troll. There were several thousand people waiting in line, and only a few of them could take part in the episode. – Imagine 2 million receivers turned on. In the morning! Let only 10 percent of those 2 million, that is 200,000 viewers, be children. Let 10 percent of that want to make a call. This is 20,000 calls at once – stressed Andrzej Niemirski on YouTube in an interview with the channel. The problem also appeared when the lucky person who managed to make the call turned out to have a telephone with a crank. It was impossible to play with such a device. Memories of failed attempts dominate. “I managed to call there, but there were some problems and it disconnected. More times I didn’t get such a chance” – recalled one of the users of the program. To this day, many who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s remember the program fondly. Some hope that he will return to the air again. The fact that the episode from March 2005, published on YouTube, collected over a million views can prove a great nostalgia.
When I was little, I used to watch it all the time and dreamed of calling in and playing there
I remember one time a guy called a dial phone and couldn’t do anything and all you could hear was trrrr trrr in the background. It was sad.
Watched it every morning at breakfast.
