On the night of May 23-24, 2023, a tragedy occurred in Nowy Targ, the echoes of which are still echoing throughout Poland. In the Podhalański Specialist Hospital named after John Paul II, a 33-year-old patient of the pregnancy pathology department – Mrs Dorota died. She was in the fifth month.
Shortly after her death, the medical facility issued a statement. In it, the hospital assured, among other things, that “it is open to cooperation with any authorities whose purpose is to clarify the circumstances of the patient’s sudden death.” The case is currently being investigated by the police and the prosecutor’s office.
Further steps regarding the negligence of the hospital staff were taken by the husband of the deceased. Mr. Marcin gave an interview to Onet, in which he informed, among other things, that he had sent a special letter to the Ombudsman for Patients’ Rights.
My wife shouldn’t have died. The treatment offered to her in the hospital was inconsistent with current medical knowledge and contrary to what was recommended after the death of Mrs. Izabela from Pszczyna, in particular, she was deprived of the right to decide whether she wanted to save her life or try to maintain the pregnancy while the fetus was still alive. After death – which is not known when it happened – there is no justification for delaying the induction of stillbirth
– he announced in an interview with Onet.pl. When asked what he regrets most about the medical staff, he replied: “Unless both my wife and I were not informed in time about the consequences of Dorota’s water breaking. That the child would not survive it. Maybe then it would be possible to save at least one life, my wife’s life.
A distraught husband fights for justice after his wife’s death. “She wasn’t given a choice”
In a letter addressed to the Ombudsman for Patients – as Onet quotes – Mr. Marcin indicates, among other things, that his wife was deprived of the rights “to be treated with due diligence, in accordance with current medical knowledge, with respect for the right to information about health and consent to the accepted method of treatment.
Two of the ten objections he makes to doctors are as follows:
The wife was not informed that the chances of maintaining the pregnancy with diagnosed complete anhydrosis are minimal, and the risk of infection and sepsis, as well as threats to her life and health, are high.
The wife was given no choice but to induce a miscarriage in the face of rising inflammatory parameters
