Piotr Gąsowski recalls working with Robin Williams: “Kalambury” has arrived

At the end of the 20th century, Piotr G±sowski had a chance to become an internationally famous actor. He worked on a film set alongside Robin Williams, where he was treated like a real star, and on the street he aroused more admiration than an American star. Unfortunately, not everything went his way. Years later, in the “WojewódzkiKędzierski” podcast, he mentioned with tears in his eyes that it was the greatest profession in the actor’s career.

In the 1990s, Piotr Gąsowski was already a recognizable figure, but he failed to play the main role in any film or series. He was mainly known for hosting the game show “Kalambury” in Polsat. Shortly after taking part in the production of Goldman-Silberman in “Gold of Deserters”, the continuation of “CKDezerters”, he decided to go to the casting of the American Holocaust film “Jacob the Liar”, where the title character was played by Robin Williams.

The Pole managed to join the cast of the American film

At first, everything went according to the actor’s plan. He got the supporting role of the Jew Rozenek, and the film was shot in Poland, so he didn’t have to leave the country. In an interview, he admitted that when he got to the set, he was surprised by the approach of the American team:

I arrived at the set and the lady opened up to me: ‘My name is Rachel, I’ll be your assistant, thank you for agreeing to be in this film’. I think to myself, ‘Did I agree? I would fucking pay extra to be in this movie. He leads me to the RV, and there are two rooms, a bottle of wine. I sat down and cried with happiness – he recalled in the podcast ‘WojewódzkiKędzierski’.

The contract he signed allowed him to work on the set of “Jacob the Liar” for three weeks, the first two of which were preparations, before the start of shooting with the American star. “I practiced English with a Yiddish accent. It was so-called Yiddishing” – confessed the Polish star.

When the Pole and the American got to know each other, it quickly turned out that they were on the same wavelength. However, on one occasion, Gasiowski felt very awkward around Williams. When they were on their way to the set in Piotrków Trybunalski, they were accosted by a crowd of autograph hunters who, surprisingly, were completely uninterested in the Hollywood star: “No one approached him. I was embarrassed. ‘What did you play that everyone knows you here so much? ?’ – Williams asked me (…) So I show people that he is a star, but they say: ‘We don’t know him, we know you, ‘Puns’ have arrived’, described Gąsowski.

Piotr Gąsowski about himself: the next Pola Negri. He also invented his version of the international surname

It turns out that the first day on the set with the world star was as interesting as their walk. “I have a scene with Williams. Slap and I fuck in the first sentence. Stop camera. A psychologist comes in, grabs my hand and asks if I can keep playing like I’m a boxer after a knockdown. Like an idiot. I thought that Monte Casino, hussars, the Battle of Vienna, Katyn. I’m a Pole with a banner in an American film, the successor of Pola Negri… It’s all so hard on me that I’m going to shit… and he asks me if I can play ‘Fuck off’, I shouted, and it went,” said the actor.

Gąsowski had high hopes for this project. He confessed that he had already seen himself on the red carpet at the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and at least in Cannes. He could not sleep from the impression, and in his mind he had already composed his speech for one of the above. events. He also created a new version of his surname, which will be easier for foreigners to pronounce – Gasov.

After finishing work on the set, the Americans sent the edited film to the Polish co-producer, Lw Rywin. The first show was truly intimate, but Piotr Gąsowski also participated in it. As he recalls years later, it was the worst day of his acting career:

Half an hour has passed, I should have appeared twice already, because I had 15 of these scenes. (…) There is a scene when Williams is walking, in the original I ran up to him and I was supposed to talk to him. But I see him coming, but that’s after I ran out to him. […] No one in the room knew I had been cut. And at the end, silence, I sit and cry, even now I want to cry. […] It was the worst day of my acting life ever – Piotr Gąsowski summed up the whole story.
