The beginnings of Polish game shows. From “Parrot Crossword” to “Tournament of Cities”

The first game shows on Telewizja Polska were broadcast in the late 1950s. The Game Shows Editorial Office was responsible for creating new formats and coming up with questions. The formula of programs broadcast at that time was mostly based on popular quizzes and parlor games. Viewers could watch such game shows as “Guess-guessed”, “Tic-tac-toe”, “Sea Battle” or “Crossword with a parrot”. The latter was distinguished by prizes quite unusual today, because the winner received … a live parrot (in later years, the game show “Gęś” was based on similar principles, in which the prize was a live goose). Local formats were also created, such as “Journey through the Baltic” or the popular “Tournament of Cities”. Polish cities and towns competed in the program, and the participants took part in several competitions. The main assumption was to promote tourism or local products, and the tasks were diverse. For example, tractor races or typing races were held.

“The Great Game”. On air for 44 years, it is the longest-running Polish game show

“Wielka gra” is the longest-running game show on Polish television. He made his debut on Polish Television in 1962. Initially, the program was led by Ryszard Serafinowicz, who left Poland in 1969. He was replaced by an earlier assistant, Joanna Rostocka, who was taken off the air in 1973. The real revolution was brought by Wojciech Pijanowski, who in 1975 changed the formula, adding a characteristic circle or envelopes in the finale. At that time, Stanisława Ryster became the host, associated with “Wielkagra” until the very end of the broadcast in 2006.

“The Great Game” has enjoyed great popularity over the years. The players had to show great specialist knowledge in a given field, and the questions asked by the experts in the game show were often so difficult that the viewers had no chance to even guess the answers. The winners could also count on big prizes.
