Bruce Willis couldn’t tell plan from reality. “Working with him was heartbreaking”

Information about Bruce Willis’s retirement appeared in 2022. As it turns out, his health problems appeared much earlier and were felt by people who had to work with the actor. The stage designer Alicia Haverland told us how the star confused the set with reality.

When he was born 68 years ago in Germany, nobody expected him to become one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. Initially, he chose to work in a factory instead of studying acting, but when he changed his mind, he was fired just before graduation. Despite this, he soon made his Broadway debut, and soon after became a world-class star thanks to his role in the timeless Die Hard. It is impossible to list the actor’s noteworthy roles in one breath today. He created great characters in, among others, “The Sixth Sense”, “Pulp Fiction” by Tarantino or “The Fifth Element”.

Unfortunately, the actor’s health does not allow him to continue his career. In 2022, the star announced his retirement. Willis’s family later announced that the actor was suffering from frontotemporal dementia, also known as dementia. It results in memory problems, emotional disorders, difficulties in communication, and even aphasia. Patients with dementia need constant care and cannot cope with independent functioning, which excludes professional work.

In February 2023, Willis’s family informed the actor’s fans that his health problems had worsened. As it turns out, Willis’s associates noticed changes in his behavior much earlier. Production designer Alicia Haverland also spoke about working with Bruce Willis in the documentary about Emmett Randall’s abuses, The Randall Scandal.

Willis mistook her for a waitress and refused coffee. “It broke my heart”

The creators met while filming the thriller “Midnight in the Switchgrass”, which premiered in 2021, but the production began a year earlier. As we read Insider, Haverland told how she approached the actor and was about to pour coffee into his cup, and Willis, apparently taking her for a real waitress, protested. “No ma’am, I don’t want more” – he turned to the stage designer. Haverland tried to explain to the actor that she was on a film set, but Willis couldn’t take it and seemed confused. The woman confessed that working with the actor tore her heart.

Other witnesses on the set of the thriller told The Times that Willis was also disoriented when the filmmakers tried to persuade him to open the door with a deft kick. The actor did not know what to do. Haverland confessed that she felt guilty for not reacting during the shoot and not interceding for the sick star. “We should have said something,” he says in the documentary.
