After taking the substance, she had hallucinations and paranoia lasting several weeks, and began to have memory problems. In addition, she lost her voice. She undertook treatment, which lasted as long as 18 months, but even after the end of therapy, she did not sound like before.
In the meantime, she also met Gordon Farquhart, whom she married. For years, the couple led a nomadic lifestyle, they did not work, and their only source of income was benefits. McDonald was cut off from the media, so she did not know that fans were concerned about her fate.
After revealing this information, McDonald announced that she did not plan to reactivate her career. She changed her mind only 7 years later after the death of her partner. Then she renewed contacts with friends from the industry and resumed work on her third album. The album was released on the phonographic market in 2013. Soon after, during The False Beards at Green Note, she performed in front of an audience for the first time after a 34-year break. In the following years, she sang in Scottish clubs and played small concerts, which culminated in a concert tour in 2017.
